Grip to use for dead lift?

I just recently added dead lifts to my routine and was wondering about the grip style for the lift. I keep reading in places to use an alternating grip while other descriptions appear not to emphasize it.
What is common convention here? Are there no problems with assymetrical loading when using an alternating grip or do you swap wrist rotation between sets?

use over/over until you can no longer hold the weight, then use under/over...rotating which is under to over and vis-a-versa

I agree alternating grip is the way to go most of the time. When you start getting really heavy, the underhand grip can cause a lot of strain on the bicep and wrist. That is why I typically use the hook grip - you don't need much grip strength either, because your thumb would rip off before you would lose grip.

Thanks. My weight has just climbed up over my bench press and I am starting to notice some strain with an over/over grip.
Can you explain the hool grip?

you basically put your thumb between the bar and your fingers, rather than wrapping it around the bar.

here is a pic.

hook grip

as prez said above, it will hurt tremendously until the nerves are dead in that area. only takes a few times.

i've heard the same thing about the hook grip. hard as a motherfucker to get used to but by far the best grip

personally, i started with a double over grip, but eventually your grip will not be able to support the progressing weight. i go under/over, but i dont rotate which is under and which is over, im just too lazy.

havnt had an problems or lacking parts bc of it either.
