Gyno Surgery - must be plastic surgeon?

I have been jumping through all the hoops with a general surgeon to have my gyno removed. After 3 appointment for which he charged my insurance 250 a pop, he told me if he took it out he could disfigure my chest. He referred me to a plastic surgeon he is friends with.

I thought it was a relatively easy procedure? Is there a high risk of disfiguring?
Would insurance cover it if a plastic surgeon does it?

You have to understand into day of medicine that a lot of surgeons are also plasitc even if they specialize in another field.

For example: I recenlty (4 months ag) broke my 4th metacarpal and needed to have 2 screws inserted to hold the bone in place. The individual who did my operation was a surgeon that specialized in Hands and Feet, but also was board certified as a plastics.

Your doctor is right to be sending you there.

A friend of mine also had the gyno surgery. When it was done, over the days, his chest started filling with blood. Eventually he poked himself to get rid of the blood buildup. He needed a second surgery, where he went to a plastic surgeon, and had his glands removed in the process. He turned out fine.
Whoever you choose, make sure they are qualified.

Go with a plastic surgeon. Plastics will do it with a scope meaning less scaring better cosmetic apperance. A general surgeon will likely do an open surgery leaving a scar around the nip. Look for someone with experience and good luck. If you have further questions just ask or IM.

not true
many plastics will use the incision around the nipple to remove the mammary glands. there is no scar because he does it at the base of the nipple aerola and the skin color change there conceals the incision. they also do it this way to make sure that the chest is asthetically correct and that usually means a little bit of sculpting with a canula is involved (lipo). By the way, I consulted with about 12 of them and they all did it with incisions. My advice to you is to find the best doc in town, wait for him if you have to and pay him what he is worth. I've done it both ways ...trust me on this.
I've had my mammaries taken out and my chest looks great.

Good luck bro

two things where you shouldn't be cheap

Lawyers and Doctors.

If they are cheap, they are usually cheap for a reason. Maybe they cannot build their practice, which usually means not a lot of happy customers.

Talk to a lot of people who have had the procedure done. Find the best doc. Shovel over the money.

FYI plastic surgeons are experienced in techniques that will minimize scarring. I have a scar on my arm that looks like it was made with a rusty knife from the best orthopedic surgeon in NY when I busted my arm. I have no mark on my face from a similar sized gash which was closed by a plastic surgeon when I crashed my car.

My friends dad is a dentist and he's a certified plastic surgeon.

I will not go into detail, but I am very familiar with this procedure, I have never had it done. Do your homework, often a inverted bl incision is used if there is nipple displacement. However, newer techniques have minimized open scars to simple obturator sites. Meaning its done though a scope. I have experience with both procedures. I won't tell a plastic surgeon is better than a general surgeon, ask around for who is the best. In the past month I have referred 3 pts to general surgeons and all three were referred from the general surgeon to plastics. Do your homework make a wise informed deceision.

Have it done by a professional. This is obviously something that is bothering you, so get it delt with properly. I made this exact mistake once already, and trust me, it's not worth it.
