How does squatting affect your whole body?

I have heard all different things about squatting and how it should be a staple of any workout routine. I have also heard that squatting even helps the upper body parts such as bicepts, tricepts, chest, shoulders etc grow bigger... Is this true, and if so how? If it is not then where do these rumors come from and why?

Squatting just like heavy Deads hits the cns so hard your body is forced to grow or die!! lol im pretty sure it has been proven to raise your natty test levels, so obviously with a higher test level it is easier to add muscle to the entire body!

Where did you learn how to spell biceps and triceps? There is no 't' in there...
