how much blood is too much?

This is the first time I've done a thigh pin amd seen blood on aspiration. It wasn't much but i pulled it, purged the blood and switched to a new needle for another go.
sure seemed like a waste. It wasn't a lot of blood. I suspect i hit a vein on the way in. Bit is no blood allowed when u aspirate? Hated wasting good product.

I think the answer is yes ... no blood. Sounds like you did everything exactly perfect. I assure you it's not a waste. If you hit a vein, you will know it within a few seconds of injecting. This can happen even when you aspirate and no blood shows up (sadly I know this first hand). It's .... the opposite of fun. You will find it hard to breath and you will probably feel flushed all over. It's a feeling so unpleasent that you will want to avoid it - which is what you did.

the only thing I can add is there really was no need to switch needles. Just find another site and try again.

I don't even aspirate anymore as I was told by my doc's office that nurses are trained nowadays to not aspirate due to new studies indicating it's not necessary. The only time I change my injection site is if I hit a nerve (vastus lateralis) because it's damn near impossible to keep pushing on that plunger with my leg twitching uncontrollably.

I agree. I may gently pull back on the plunger, but for the majority, if I don't hit a nerve I drop the plunger. R

Yep, two schools of though on this. Can't tell you which one is better. It's your choice, aspirate or not. You will hit a blood vessel sooner or later - it's not fun but it's part of the deal.

I tend to be a bleeder, and I react to meds, so I think I'll continue to aspirate. though I'm unclear why I can't shoot the blood back into me with the gear. it came out through a sterile needle into the gear, seems like a little blood would be absorbed the same as the gear in the muscle in the decond pin site
