Is muscle memory real????

spiderpig

I'm not a bodybuilder!
Ok' I was speaking to an old friend today, I asked is he still training, he said no, he has had a lot of time of, but he also said that he has just started back and he is really weak compared to what he used to be, he said when he was training last time, he was hitting 120kg on the bench for 10 reps. now he is only doing 80kg for 10 reps, He then said he can easy get it back in about 6 weeks because of muscle memory through the training he has done in the past,

So!

Does muscle memory exist?
If so can you bang it back on in such short space of time?

^^^^ LOL.

But about the muscle memory, Id say there is something like that , my HS coach told me he didnt hit gym for 4 mounths cuz of hockey season. And it took him about 2 mounths to get back where he was before.

Depends on what you refer to as muscle memory. Some people refer to it in strength, others refer to it in size. Obviously, the size way of looking at it is ridiculous. If you don't train for 2 years, lose significant amounts of muscle...no, it will not return in two weeks of training due to "muscle memory."

Strength is a different story. A lot of people forget that there is skill in performing lift movement...like riding a bike. People can get rusty on the specifics of the movements and in a couple of weeks can get their skills back, meaning their strength.

^ agree with this post. I think that they already know the technique and form, and that they kept a decent amount of their strength during their off time, and so coming back would be a lot easier. Im not sure if your friend could get his lifts back to where they were before in the amount of time he said though

I think it is def for real. I think both strength and size both return more quickly to one that once had both. I do agree that strength first then size.

A big one that is being overlooked is repeatable motions. For example, rock climbing. Building muscle memory through repeated motions.

When you 'go through the motions' it refers to muscle memory.

Muscle memory is very real. Weightlifting, as well as taking anabolic hormones, increases the number of myonuclei in your muscle fibers. It is these myonuclei which actually stimulate protein synthesis. When you stop weightlifting your body will still retain these myonuclei, which will make your muscles return to their previous size much quicker. Myonuclei stay around for decades, so even if you lifted weights when you were 20 you will still have those same myonuclei ready to build muscle when you are 50, which is why getting into shape when you are young is very important if you want to have any muscle when you're old. This is also why people who take anabolic steroids, even one or two cycles, will have a permanent advantage over someone who has never cycled- steroids also increase the number of myonuclei.

Muscle memory is the adaptation of a muscle to do certain move to any specific or desire task for what you train during long period of time and becomes almost natural to perform for that specific purpose.
Ex. using a weapon, or like in this case perform a movement or a exercise or form . Yes it is REAL!!!!

Your body becomes more specialized to the movement over time, so i think the strength part would be real althought not sure on the mass as thats more of a time issue.

Mass and strength come back more quickly. I know this from experience, and there's the science that backs it up. Look at my post above.

A while ago I snapped my ankle and couldn't work out my legs for about 2 months and I bounced back within 2 or 3 weeks when I came back. Muscle memory is very real.

Great post, never knew that. I will now research myonuclei.

I just started working out again in November after 5 years, yes 5 years and I'm almost back to where I left off! I'm fat as hell in the gut but the strength is hugely noticeable.
