Just getting started

I have checked this site out a couple of times while researching testosterone replacement therapy (TRT). You guy's have made it easier for me to communicate with my urologist. 8 weeks ago my results came back at 270. I had the same symptoms as many of you. I'm 46 and I am 6'1 about 250lbs. I was tired, low sex drive and I felt like I was getting old. My wife is 33 and hot and I knew I could not keep sliding down the path to accepting the way I felt. My Doc started me on 100 mg of Test Cyp once a week. 6 weeks later my level was at 380. I started 200 mg of test cyp once a week last week. I feel better, sex drive and energy up. I hope things continue to improve. I am doing either weights or cardio every day. I hope to drop to 220lbs. You guy's are great and your posts motivate me to improve-thanks. What's HRT?

HRT is a more broad term referring to Hormone Replacement Therapy. There are different forms of Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) and testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) is one of them.

I've just basically posted the same response three times, but you should go with Chip and stop messing around. If your estrogen gets out of hand all the benefits will be reversed. Also free test is just as important.

I don't mean to hi jack the thread. And this might be a really basic question, so forgive me in advance.

I'm well aware that when your estrogen gets too high it can give you the same feelings/symptoms of low T. However does it actually CAUSE low T? For instance, if estrogen was getting out of hand and you were experiencing low T symptoms because of the estrogen, if you got your T levels tested, would they check out fine, but it just isn't doing any good because of all the estrogen?

Or is it that when estrogen starts getting out of control, it drives your T levels down and you are left with mostly estrogen and very little test?

For every estrogen there has to be two testosterones in order to balance it out, one to cancel the estrogen and another to live in the blood stream. Most guys with estrogen stress will also have high SHBG. SHBG is like a ferry that accepts estrogen and testosterone to bind to it. If SHBG is too high, then testosterone and estrogens will bind in and your free testosterone will be low, because whatever isn't bound to SHBG is circulating. Therefore, less will be circulating if more is bound up to a high SHBG. So you could have a very high test level and have a high SHBG and still have low free testosterone if estrogen is binding in. So to answer your question, high estrogen can lead to low free testosterone. Total test is a measure of your gonad/adrenal strength. So while the lab may show high test still, the high estrogen will be cancelling out much of the testosterone.

High estradiol will lower total testosterone directly because of the effects of the aromatase conversion. Free testosterone is indirectly affected from this conversion because low testosterone means lower free testosterone. If someone had normal testosterone levels but low free testosterone levels, the culprit is SHBG not estradiol.
