Knee surgery (ACL)... and deca..

Ok, let me say first off, I tried the search function, but came up empty....

But, I'm 33, training for 14 years with only the last year "on", and am scheduled for my second ACL replacement surgery on my right knee - reinjured about 3 years ago, but wanted to get it taken care of before I get any older and before a potential job change. I've been off for a month now (ran a 8 week EQ cycle with a little Deca and Sust thrown in the middle), and the surgery is scheduled in 2 and a half weeks.

My questions...

Pre-surgery they ask you if you've done steroids. I'm not wanting to give full disclosure, well... 'cause I don't. Any danger in having the surgery with some oil based residue still floating around in the system?
What type of gear are they looking for?

Second question... A deca only cycle (with a little bit of D-bol) was my first (can you say "shut down"?) cycle, and while results were pretty good, the pain in my joints (old rugger) was by far the greatest benefit to me. So I'm thinking about this three month rehab I have coming up, and wondering if I can run a little bit of deca to help things along... Maybe 200mg a week right after the surgery for the next 8 weeks... Your thoughts?

Thanks!

As far as your first question, I would say that your fine. The primary effects of the steroids should be out of your body by now. But I feel compelled to tell you that Orville Burke, a top professional bodybuilder, went in for tricep surgery about 2 weeks after the Mr. Olympia in 2002 and ended up falling into a coma. Rumors quickly spread that the coma was caused by his steroid use being combined with the anaesthesia and other drugs that were used during the surgery.

Using Deca while rehabbing from an ACL injury technically shouldnt help as much as you think. I believe the better bet for you in this instance with regards to helping the ACL heal would be some GH therapy. But I am not even close to a Doctor so I would feel much better if you PM'ed Buffdoc and gave him a link to this thread.

Hey Atrophy,

When they ask about steroids, usually it is for the other class of roids--the ones that fight inflamation. Not AAS.

Yep, I know about old joints(knees and back). I was a tight head forward

Thanks guys!

Just want to make sure I'm all good. Going to do a 12-16 week cycle of EQ and Prop when I get back (January), and thought I'd kick it all off with Deca for the joints.

Great board you have here, BTW. I was a member of Elite for a while, but very happy that I've found my way over here.

I agree with biggie... I would go the GH route to help things along instead of deca or other steroids...you want that ACL to get stronger... you will lose muscle (as Im sure you know already) in the leg and you will be lucky if it ever matches up to your other leg...the key is hitting that rehab as hard as you can.. and it sucks..

Just a quick follow-up. Knee surgery went well and the doctor called me a mutant as it's the fastest ever recovery from a patient after their second ACL surgery.... 5 1/2 weeks and he told me I was where most patients are after 4 months... :D

By the way, ran deca at 300mg per week for 5 weeks - now on eq and enth with some winstrol soon to join the mix after the enth runs out. Other than the smaller wheels (just started doing legs again), results are phenomenal for a third cycle.

Well, everybody rehabs at astoundingly different rates. As a student trainer, I get to see all sorts of good shit like that. We had 6 ACL's this year (amazingly high, a normal is like 2-3), and the first one, from back on DAY 2 of the season, just started running and stuff about 1.5-2 months ago, a full 4 months after the injury. 3rd one to go, he had to go in for a second surgery, because his rehab was so slow and the scar tissue had built up too much. The 2nd and 4th guys came out of their surgeries at almost full extension. Everybody varies, and there is no way to tell how fast you will come along, but having good strength presurgery is a good indicator of a quicker rehab, in most cases.

hornedfrogs...

Without question, you are correct. This, however, being my second ACL surgery to the same knee, I thought my recovery was astounding (first surgery took my patella tendon as the graft with some clean-up to the cartiledge, second surgery was cadaver graft with a split meniscus that was stapled to the bone and hamstring) and the deca was an major player in the recovery.

One major difference that you hit upon, however, was pre-surgery strength. An injury, followed by crutches for two months prior to my first surgery left my right wheel in a sorry condition, and my recovery (to the point I'm at now) did, in fact, take about 3-4 months. This time, a week prior to surgery I was hack squatting almost 700, with my leg strength almost back to normal. (That and I was careful to try to keep the leg elevated, took two weeks off from work, and iced the knee as much as possible.)

atrophy,
using decca for post surgery is a good idea being that decca helps put solnovial fluid back into your joints ...a better solution may be alittle HGH this would be the best answer but is expensive........HGH would help generate new cells that would help you recover alot faster

My buddy had his 2nd acl surgurey two weeks ago. He asked his physio about taking HGH and the physio said that that was fine but to wait for 2 month after the surgery. He plans on starting some gear soon and then adding in the HGH in a month or so. Hopefully he heals well.
