Maxing out?

I'm not a competitive powerlifter but I've always thought that benching 315 would be cool as hell. In my last workout I did 250 for 8 reps. On an online max calculator it said that my max should be 317. I'd like to try it but was wondering what kind of preparing I should do. I haven't been doing less than 6 rep sets since I started lifting again. Can I just shoot for it on my next bench day after warming up? Do I have to lower the reps over time like and wait a few weeks to try it? Can't wait to bench with 3 plates per side! :rockband:

If you want to find out your 1RM, warm up, then work with sets of 3 reps... progressing weight each set.... then when you can't get 3 reps, drop to singles, and work up to a 1RM....

you could try a pyramid seting your last single at 315#.i think you take the 315# then find 60% for a first set of 10,then 70% for 7,then 80% for 5,then 90% for 3,then your 1rm of 315# if you get the next time you do this you got to set your 1rm # higher.

just warm up ad go for it. dont make something as simple as doing a single complicated. this is weight lifting not rocket science

PB, most lifters are absolutely clueless about how to do a single, or even how to go about doing sets of 5 if all they have ever done has been sets of 10. It blows me away everytime I am asked "how much weight should I use?" Hell, I don't know, increase the weight and drop reps and don't do any taxing warm-ups and you will find out.

Please pardon me, but I do believe that your proposed method of determining the one repetition maximum weight will not be successful. This is because he will be fatigued from his prior sets.

I do about 2 warmup sets, then do a 'heavy' single which for me would be anywhere from 315-365 then I go for my max. The heavy single gets my CNS ready for something heavy, the warmups are what get my physical self warmed up. I sometimes will take longer rests even during my warmups for this process.

When I was having pains in my forearms (nerve or bone dont know) I would get up to 7 warmups before my heavy worksets.

***What i do, take 145lbs.. Warm-up 6 times.... wait 3 min. take 200lbs. push 2x.....
wait 3min. take 250lbs. push 2x....
Then wait 3min. push what you want to max......
training for 23yrs. not one injury..... :druggie:

Want strength??? Look into Dorian Yates, training, i have been on that for years....I Dont look like a body builder--- Everyone thinks i am a football player.... My wife likes the "big" look and dont like the "cut " look.... So do i..... If i didn't, i would be cut....

true but that layout is just the typical WSB for ME work..
i think its largely individual..personally i like to take lots of singles increasing the weight and making unifrom jumps..if i take a big jump i feel weaker

basically like IA said if you are "maxing" you should warm up enough without any of ur sets being to taxing even if they are "heavy"

Of course, kind sir, none taken! :flipoffha hahaha

I can understand why you say that, but I thought that would be the best method? So do what you and IA mentioned, just with really light warm-ups, then right to singles?
