Military Press

A statement in the "DB Press or Military press" thread by blackbeard spurred me to ask this question:

Behind the head military press or front military press?

Which should be the core movement in a 5x5 shoulder routine? Currently, I go behind the head. Seems to hit delts well and I have been adding 5lbs every week with no problems. I also do L-laterals and bent-over front laterals for the 2-3x8-10 movements. Just curious if front military presses would be more beneficial in the core position?

Front military press! Here's why, you are hyperextending your shoulders and this position does not give you enough benefit for the risk of injury you are taking. More bodybuilders have regrets about behind the head military presses, once injured your shoulder workouts will be severely limited. Behind the neck presses are not a natural movement, thus you are more prone to injury.

Thanks huskyguy. Switching them as of right now. Since I am used to behind the head, should I decrease weight for front presses? Or are the two movements close enough that the same would suffice?

Same weight should suffice, in fact you may find that you are stronger when it comes to front presses. I know that I am.
