They WERE from rival families yes , back when Italian city states were making bank off the spice trade . Both from overland caravans trekking through Arabia and Persia and from merchant shipping. Overland caravans ran right through present day Afghanistan where powerful tribal leaders made their living either providing safe passage or jacking the loads for resale.
Romeo was into hanging out late at night in what we would call the bar scene doing our equivalent of the latest " drug ". There was this new substance from the island of Java called COFFEE which when first introduced hit the "scene" much like "x" blew the clubs away in the mid 80 s when it was so easily available.
Romeo would get all hopped up and euphoric on this new awesome form of stimulant that he would be at her window tweaking and singing songs and exclaiming his undying love for Juliette.
Damn kids and there exploratory recreational drug use. Even then only alcohol was cool.
An English lit professor told me this way back.
