Post bilateral hernia, need to jump back in

I have been lifting about 13 years. I have not been diligent the past 2 years and basically I jumped back into working out right before I had a work related hernia. I have been all natural with lifting the entire time and I have hit a plateau and hit my peak potential before I quit. I would like to get back to my prior condition and I am now considering gear. Now that I am facing rehabilitation on my hernia(s) would it be a bad time to jump into gear once I am healed? How long should I wait before I start is what I am really wondering. Has anyone else experienced this or something similar and if you have how long did you wait and are the any exercise that you recommend for building my core strength again. I am 29, male, 6'1" 175lbs.
