Question on the use of belts.

Imagine no liberals
I stopped using a belt over 10 years ago due to lower back pain. Once I stopped using it, my lower back muscles started getting much stronger and I have no real need for belts today.

Lately, however, I have been increasing the weight on my deadlifts and SL Deadlifts and noticed my lower back is getting more sore (not always a "good" sore).

What are people's opinions on using belts?

I do not wear a belt either, but there's a couple things to keep in mind here. I use sport conditioning and a BB style of training/techniques. Meaning I do not power lift and rarely max out. On a day where I would 1 rep max SQ or DL, I would definetly grab a belt and a spotter.

I generally train the same way until I hit a plateau. Then I up the frequency of my power movements. I may pick up a belt and use it only on my heavy lifts.

Thanks......

Belts are an important tool in keeping my back from getting injured.

When do you use a belt? On what exercises?

I've found that the overuse of belts results in weaker lower back muscles.

I don't use a belt unless I'm going over 450......I know at that weight or higher, with the shape my back is in, it's good to have on just in case.

i don't use a belt. Everytime i've tried, it's never worked out. I consider myself having a strong lower back from not using belts

constant use at lower weights is a mistake in my opinion . i will leave my lever belt on and only clamp it down on heavy sets , i like the heat that leaving the belt on even when not clamped gives my lower back .

belts are bennificial to wear.

like dadawg said, don't use it on light sets,

only use it on the heavier sets.

I've got a history of back problems, i only use a belt when I'm squating or DL'ing 85% of my 1rm.

I don't wear the belt too tight, I make sure I push out against the belt with my abs and diaphram.

i just wear it when doing DL and heavy sqauts ( i stopped doing the heavy squats now ).

what the weight u pull and ur body weight ?

I've found that the overuse of belts results in weaker lower back muscles.

Heaviest sets of squats, bb rows, stiff leg deadlifts, whatever exercise has a high risk of tearing my back in half. Check out my cycle log if you want specifics, my back is far from weak.

Sweet....good feedback all. Though I prefer not to wear one, I think I'll pick up a belt for my heavy DL's and SL DL's.

One thing a belt does that really protects the back is that it helps to spread the tension evenly across the lower back as opposed to directly along the spine. I agree that they should only be worn during maximal effort sets.

There is at least one good discussion in the last 2 years on belts. I myself don't use one currently.

got to go with the majority here guys, no need to don a belt unless your maxing out for 1-2 reps.

the same can be said for wraps/wrist straps, they almost certainly hinder forearm development/strengh and are only benificial for 1-2 heavy reps where there might be a risk of injury.

and in my opinion, belts have their places on heavy sets or them 1 rep maxes..just don't use them often on all workouts. i mean, come on man...
