raw bench set up and bench.

since we are talking about benching i almost never hear anything about the descent of the bar..slow and controlled yes but my question is what muscles should be used in bringing the bar down i assume you wanna keep the tricep strength for pushing and the lockout..its not a negative rep correct?
i dig my elbows into my side to provide resistance on the descent . theres a lot of lat and bi in the negative portion of the bench .

and i would imagine with the "correct" set up its easier to engage the stabilizer muscles...

the decsent is controlled by the shirt. those dd have one groove. its a small groove so i just kinda relax and let the bar fall where it may. my big belly. =0) depending on the weight the bar will stop anywhere from 1-6" above you belly. you then have to roll up to get the bar to touch. this is the trick to benching with the shirt. gettingit to touch while keeping the elbows as straight as possible. if you dont roll up the bar can sit there for ever with no strain on the lifter at all. the shirt is supporting the weight.

if youll watch kyle's 525x5 youll see where the bar is stopping. he is not rolling up to touch it.

BTW kyle hit a 675 today @ 230ish. 23 years old. if he hit that in a meet it would have given himn the 9th biggest bench ever by a 220er. he may hit 7 at our next meet.

very awesome lift- its amazing that he is so young too.
I can't use a DD for the reason's you mentioned- the groove is too low for me and i can't arch my back up enough to touch- its too much shirt for me.

raiseing the head can allow less weight to touch in the same shirt . and i know its a expensive experiment but a wider chest plate on the dd will allow you touch a weight you can press , karen has made denim shirts for little kids so i know she can make one for you .

I know- i've said before that i have to get my shirts custom made- I'm sure she could make one for me, but i'm happy with what i have for now. I've had some luck getting people's hand-me-downs and sending them in for alteration.

i just want to know who the lucky rascal is that gets to reach in the shirt and arrange the jewels :)

lol...
don't think i wasn't worried about that the first time i got a shirt- i usually have a training partner and although he's a normal, trustworthy person and i can joke with him, i wasn't too thrilled with having him rearrange me. Plus, its bad enough being the only female lifting weights and the only one ever to use a bench shirt, i didn't need them all watching that.but, maybe its cause my inzer is made well, or cause i wear undergarments made of steel, but no arranging has had to be done. :)
at least, not by him.

sug a big arch is not necesarry to bench in a dd. i dont use a big arch. the trick to touching is rolling your shoulders up off the bench a bit as the bar stalls. i can touch 405 if i have to. i normally dont try to touch in training til the last workout. thats this saturday. we hit our openers and thats it. meet day in less than two weeks.

i have almost NO arch. I'd consider getting one one day- i just think it might be too much for me now. i'm gonna start working with the fury i have and see how it goes.

the fury is a low groove shirt , just so you know .

heres a trick for ya . on the poly shirts especially you can put them on with your palms up like a reverse grip bencher and if the sleeves are tight and wont slip the sleeves will help pull your elbows in when you turn you hands over to bench over hand .

hmm.. you mean it will pull my elbows in to bench lower?
if thats what you mean.. its not good for me-
i don't have that much of a curve to my spine and i sprained my back really badly once from arching, SO.... the highest point for me to bench to, to get the shortest stroke... is not my abs.
which, btw, i can't see anyway when i'm benching so i could easily not touch and not even know it.
then again, neither would the judge. lol.

not necessarily just for a low groove bench , its for anyone who has a tendency to flare the elbows out too much .
it wasnt intended just for you its just a knick knack of info for everyone .
