Recovery and Rest time

Been doing a new training split and things are going better than before. Currently am doing a 3 on 1 off approach. Actaully thinking of going to 2 on 1 off since things are going well. My question is I know your bodys CNS it what really has to recovry and stuff in order to make progressive gains, why resting is important.

Was wondering, if I do cardio for an hour on my off days, no weight training just cardio on off days will this negativly effect my recovery or in order to ully recover must I stay out of the gym entirely?
 
No, I don't believe that.. As long as your diet is check (on all days), your supplementing properly, and you don't follow leg day with tons of intense cardio, you should be fine..IMHO Listen to your body though. I'm the type of person who can train 7 days a week and maybe take a rest day one or twice per month.
 
if i did an hour and half on days off it would stop all progress. I think when you dead more then 2xbody wieght or squat more then 1.5 ATG then you need complete rest. Im in my forties though..
