Seeds - Should I grind them or not?

So, I'm in the process of jazzing up my morning porridge oats - and I know the importance of getting a mixture of seeds into my diet...

I recently bought a 5kg bag of 'Omega Seed Mix' which contains Sunflower seeds, Pumpkin seeds, Linseeds and Sesame Seeds...

My question is: Do I consume the seeds whole, therefore benefitting from the oils on the shell and the source of fibre?

Or do I grind the seeds to a powder, so that I then benefit from the goodness inside?

I notice when consuming them whole, that the body doesn't break them down (ie: they go out, looking the same as they go in!)

Any advice?

I know for flaxseed and sesame seeds its better to eat them ground. In their whole state the body cannot break them down and stomach acids cannot get through the outer shell so they pass through undigested. I'd assume it works similarly to all types of seeds but maybe to varying degrees. I'd probably just grind them all

Thanks Dre... I've been hedging my bets and having half ground and half whole... I might stick with this - then I get the best of both worlds...

I guess I was kinda hoping for a 'seed guru' to tell me everything I'd ever want to know about seed consumption... :) :chomp:

Cheers anyway Dre!

Try half and half brother, worst case scenario they pass through undigested and you get a placebo lol. Best case scenario, you get added benefits!
