Where is a good place to check out a source?

Can I just pm a mod or is there a better way?

You should send a secure Email to a couple different MOD's. Also, Email the source and ask for refs.

References are useless unles you verify them, there are lots of people that are listed as references who don't even know they are listed as such and would not back that particular source.

Also be careful to check the actual e-mail addys, it's so easy for a scammer to make a minor change to a ref's addy and then answer it themself.
