Steroids and Stunted Growth

I'm making this thread to see if anyone has any scientific data or research to back the statement that we have all heard, "Steroids can stunt your growth especially at an early age". I'm not saying this isn't true all I'm saying is I have never seen any proof or data to support this. I have looked and looked and cant find anything to support this claim so im asking for some help, thanks.

growth plates fuse in teenage years.. up until you are 21.. the start to fuse because your body naturally has a higher testosterone levels in teenage years

I know you grow until 21 on average some people grow until later and some stop sooner. I am solely interested in how AAS use can stunt growth. When I was a teenage my doctor told me not to even workout because it would stunt my growth lol I believe this is just a thing people accept in general and have heard over the years but have never checked into it. Like most people think steroids make your dick shrink, and some peole think carbs are evil, or that eating before bed will result in huge fat gain. The people who believe these things aren't stupid they just have never took the time to research this and see that none of those statements are true. I am wondering if this is the same concept for the stunted growth as well, just curious.

he's saying the reason your growth plates begin fuse during you teen years and up until you're 21-25(ish) is because of the high levels of hormones circulating......taking steroids mimics this effect of elevated hormone levels causing growth plates to fuse prematurely.

From what I have read online the only correlation between AAS and stunted growth is that excess estrogen is what causes the growth plates to close early and since testosterone converts into estrogen when using AAS the crazy amount of estrogen can cause them to close up or fuse early. But there are two other things that need to be said, first off if you are taking an AI and keeping estrogen in check and you also have a SERM and run a proper PCT you shouldn't have a problem with estrogen. Secondly most males growth plates close up by around age 18-19 and obviously everyone different so some may be even later like 20 or 21. So I don't believe using AAS at age 20-21 is really going yo stunt your growth like everyone seems to think. But like I said this isn't from a study or research its just information I have read and gathered over time. I would love to see an actual study on this.

Here is something I found online...

Rising levels of sex hormones, particularly estrogen, growth hormone and thyroid hormones stimulate osteoblast activity. Osteoblasts produce bone (from epiphyseal cartilage) faster than chondrocytes can produce epiphyseal cartilage. As a result the osteoblasts 'catch up' and the epiphyseal cartilage narrows until it ultimately dissappears. This occurs at puberty, but if children have significantly high levels of estrogen during childhood this will cause the epiphyseal plates to close earlier

we dont exactly know when our growth plates close..

when i was a freshman in high school.. i was about 5'8... when i finished high school.. i was 6'2... over the next 4 years after that i grew to 6'4. did my plates fuse that early?? of course not

well higher testosterone levels mean higher estrogen levels.. and there have been studies that show higher estrogen levels are the cause of growth plate fusion.. which explains why women stop growing at a younger age than men..

here is a abstract

Effects of estrogen on growth plate senescence and epiphyseal fusion

Okay so pretty much what I said was correct from reading this? That would also maybe explain why women in general are much shorter than men...I never wondered why that was but it make sense now. I love learning new things!

Same here just different height when I was freshmen I was probably 5'6" then by my junior year I was 5'11" and I have been there ever since then. I know only an xray or something can determine if they are closed or not,I was just wondering if taking them at liek age 20 or 21 would have such a huge effect that people seem to think but it appears that if you have already had a decent growth spurt and havnt grown for the past 2-3 years most likely your growth plates are fused or close to it.

remember though, it's not just growth plates you need to worry about, it's brain development and endocrine system as well.

so basically what you're saying is that when test peaks during teenage years = estrogen increases = growth plates fuse?
i suffer from celiacs and my condition was undiagnosed during my entire teenage years. i developed pubertal gyno at like 15 meaning my test was low whereas my estrogen was high. then how come i grew to 6'1? although now that i think about it i grew pretty fast/early and was already 6'1 at like 16 and at that point i never saw an increase in my height.

if i hand't had celiacs meaning my hormones would have been balanced during my teenage years would i have probably grown taller?
could my growth plates fuse early because of celiacs induced low test/high estrogen?

i like science

remember there is genetics involved... does it mean that if you keep your estrogen low you'll grow to 6'10??

both my brothers are tall.. my dad is 6 feet.. my mom is 5'8.. my grandpa was 6'8 on my moms side.. my uncles on my dads side are all over 6 feet tall..

its about filling genetic potential.. and the obstacles that get in the way

Oh yeah genetics definitely plays a huge role. I am taller than my mom was by alot and I havnt ever seen my dad but I know he sint very tall. Im the tallest one in my immediate family actually my grandmother was short and my grandfather was probably my height as wll.

I cant say much on your questions but just because you get pubertal gyno doesnt really men test is low I had a small amount when I was around that age as well. Plus like 3J said its all about genetics.

Height is determined by genetics. Arnold abused steroids during his teen years and still grew to 6'1. If your ment to be short you'll be short. Period.

All these articles discuss is how aggression is increased while taking testosterone. Also the study was done on rats which rats are different from humans as they dont know right from wrong and probably dont love and have emotions such as humans do. The rats were aggressive because of all the testosterone and the probably wanted some from the females and when they wouldnt give it to them they got pissed (aggressive) lol. But I dont see how my brain can mature anymore at this point in life...

Did you honestly read any of the information?

Modifications in the gonadal steroid environment, via the use of anabolic androgenic steroids (AAS), have been shown to affect brain development and behavior. Studies in both humans and animal models indicate that AAS exposure during adolescence alters normal brain remodeling, including structural changes and neurotransmitter function

That doesn't say JUST aggression, just that it was the most common side effect.

You are sitting here going over every study, article ever posted and coming up with your own justification for it. At the end of the day you are going to do what you want to do. You are showing your lack of maturity by not acknowledging the information at hand.
