The Final word on deads

Hey all, I've just started working out again after a 5 month layoff. Anyway, I've never done deads before and I want to add mass so I figured I'd start doing deads. I started out light with the deads only lifting about 95 lbs so I could get my form straight. I tried to follow the video's as best as I could but it's tuff to not round your back. Well, after about 5 sets of 5 reps, needless to say I'm in pain today. My lower back is killing me. Is this normal for somone who's never really trained lower back or done deads before? I mean, it's like the sore muscle pain which is good, I think. I was planning on incorporating deads into my routine but now I'm reading that most people say you shouldn't do deads more than once a week, some even say no more than 2x's a month!!!

So now I'm confused. I'm trying to add mass and cut up a bit so I eat alot, but I eat clean. I try to limit cardio to non-intense levels(walking).

should I even be doing deads? And how often should I do squats??

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

until you hit a plateau and get in shape i would do deads 1 time a week after you have stalled out switch to every 10 days to 2 weeks

I know 5 x 5 is "popular" but if I did 5 sets of 5 reps with a max poundage they would friggin hospitolize me the next day. I usually work up to ONE heavy set of 5, many do 2 sets, but most experinced guys leave it at no more than 2 sets done hard.

i like to do warm ups and then 2 heavy sets of 5. yes it is normal to be very sore when you first start to do them. keep doing them you will like the results.

I agree. Do deads once a wk until u stop gaining. I've been doing deads once a wk thru my whole bulking cycle which is 4months now. I am still gaining, not much, but 5lbs increments add up over time. Just keep your form good. Do u use wrestling shoes when doing deads? Try it if u don't.
