To Squat Or Not To Squat

I stopped doing heavy squats for asthetic reasons.as with deads they make my waist larger ruining my symmetry.I can go heavy on the leg press and confine more of the load in my lower half .

So for me ..High rep squats at 70% ,leg presses low and high reps 100%

i agree as far as them being the big daddy though, still have yet to puke from leg presses, not to hard to get that accomplished with some hard squats.

I personally think some people are more susceptible to certain types of injury than others. Squats may not be the best option for some.

This is the excuse that 99% of the population uses, but I don't buy it.

why dont you dead lift again lift? :)

I CAN deadlift. My problem there is if I do it I will push myself and if I push myself my back is gone. I still stiff leg dead more than most can deadlift.

I only started squatting last year after about 10 years of weight training.

I had avoided squats because whenever I tried them I got injured. I learned that those injuries were because of poor form. When I got serious about squats last year I dropped the weight and concentrated on form and the improvements were dramatic. And no injuries.

I had a difficult recovery from shoulder surgery so I lost a lot of upper body strength and weight. Once I got into squats, my overall physical strength improved. My legs got bigger and much stronger.

Even with ongoing shoulder problems I have maintained my weight and most of my upper body strength. I only do about one third the volume of chest training and no specific shoulder or arm training and I still look okay. Its gotta be the squats. They are now the foundation of every work out.

I know brosky...

but for arguement sake, doesnt the fact that you "push your self" make YOU more susseptiple to injury, therefore you dont DL do to this.

I certainly see your point. But the average gym goer would never think about getting as strong at these lifts as I did.

yes how much did you pull b4 you decided you were an injury waiting to happen?

I was up to 500 x5 as a 19 year old natty. First time I ever pulled 500 I was 6'4 220, and by the time I hurt myself I was 230 or so. Too skinny to be pulling so much I guess. Obviously I had a lot of potential that never got explored.

yes that is a lot of wt to pull up that high at your ht.
i'm sure with a level head and good form you get back there in no time if chose too.

The thing is I always used perfect form. When I hurt myself I did one rep of 500, smoked it. Down for the second, everything feels fine, on the way up, snap! Back out.

It's come to my attention recently that I may have a major postural imbalance because of this. I fear I am scaring everyone on the forum away from deadlifting.

Try some sumo pulling. Start out light with it until you get acclimated. Short with long arms is the perfect build to take advantage of the decreased ROM.
