Just had my most severe injury since i started training. I tore my labrium 2yrs ago and the doc did orthoscopic surgery on me also had a lot of broken cartiledge which he cleaned out and had a frayed biceps tendon which he cleaned.. Now same arm ive completely tore my biceps dont have any insurance right now. So ive decided to take a yr off and have the surgery in 2010, any one else have this sort of problem, now ive lost a lot of muscle but kept my belly and dont miss the gym right now..still 230lbs at 5'9 please reply peace jt

ouch, maybe take up running or cycling? depending on the injury, you could let it heal on it's own and start training again. A lot of guys have done that and it looks like crap but is still functional. Lee Priest and Dorian Yates come to mind. good luck bro

Take all the time U need to heal urself before and after surgery. Surgery is right way to go about it. Dont worry bout losing muscle, muscle has memory, and ur gains when U do comeback should be pretty quick.

I apprieciate your advice, im probably going to go back to the gym before surgery but definately going to take a yr off, im 38 and have been in the gym for the past 11 yrs 5 to 7 days a wk,, no kidding. As you can see all the heavy weight training is good for your ego but sometimes you have to back off. Ive been cycling on and off for 8yrs solid usually 3mos on 3mos off. Luckily i was off when i tore my biceps and have been off for 8mos now. I know muscle has memory from prior surgerys and i know ill be back to close to where i was..but only mostly lighter weights to moderate no more 315 military presses or 425bench...anyone else that has gone through this please reply for its good to know im not the only one..by the way priest had the surgery and looks pretty good but yates is another story . thanks jt

I'm sorry for you man. An injury is the worst thing that can happen to someone who lifts. You get depressed, you stop progressing, yous start regressing and the situation seems hopeless.

The best you can do is try to minimize your losses. Train legs and start swimming, cycling or some other sport. Find something that you can still make progress in. A completely new sport like swimming or cycling will reward you with fast progress that can keep your body and your mind healthy while you can't lift.

I hope you heal quick, don't give up man, stay strong!

Go have the surgery now and get on the payment plan. They can do a lot more for you right after a tare than they will in a year. I've had to have some reconstructive surgery. The doc told me he could have minimized the problem if he treated it right away. Talk to the doctor and tell him what the situation is and see what he thinks.

i VERY much so agree with Pirate, go see Doc as soon as you can.
let it rest, let i heal.

i'm a Physical Therapist, shoulders are not my specialty, but a history of a torn labrum along with a double tear, is nothing to take lightly. im sorry to say but you shoud definately not lift as heavy with that arm again.
like you stated, no more 315lb military presses.

the movements that are most dangerous to a compromised shoulder joint are any over head movements such as military presses, or any deltoid work, horizontal adduction of the arm and obviously no bicep work until you get the ok from a Dr.

until you see a doc, any movement that causes upper arm/shoulder pain should be completely avoided.

i have to say your attitude about it is great :) and after all those years in the gym i guarentee you still look way better then at least 90% of people out there, even when not training :)

Right on the money here If you dont sdo it now it will be fucked.

one of my powerlifting buddies had his triceps tear right off the bone and roll up his arm while pressing 500lb. scary moment. he had surgery immediately after, regained full mobility, but not strength. after suffering an injury like that, you tend to reevaluate your priorities and your style of training. i watched him rehab, no personal experience but he did well with the recovery. go to the doc now though, seriously. they have payment plans and if you limited mobility of your arm, you will regret it for the rest of your life. it is just money, you will always make more, trust me.
