Training advice for a guy at work

Noxious

Unsung Hero
There is a younger guy I work with(He's 15,I'm 19) who keeps asking me about how he can train for his hockey. He's a pretty good hockey player for his age from what I hear and might get drafted to the Q next year.

He keeps telling me he wants to put on size, but I'm not really sure what to tell him.

I was going to suggest Low rep/high weight for a while but that can seriously damage growth of a 15 year old can't it?

I suggested upping his protein and just doing simple workout stuff for now,pushups,pull-ups,etc.
Any advice would be appreciated.

have him start a routine based around the big three(bench, squat, dead). Does he train at all right now(with weights I mean)?

I don't think he weight trains at all right now.

Big 3 makes sense, but I thought that 15 was too young?

I do know a couple of powerlifters that are 16, both hold national records(or did) in Canada. The guy has since quit but the girl keeps lifting and setting records. I think they have both been lifting for a couple years and neither seem to have had any harm done by lifting that young.

i have trained children who wanted to lift and i have them bench, squat and pull deads. whats age got to do with it?

Well, you guys definately know better than I do. I was told before that if you lift at too young of an age you can stunt growth, cause problems with your growth plates or something.

I guess it was B.S

Only if they are stupid and injure themselves lifting. Really, as long as they practice proper form, they shouldn't have much to worry about. Besides, most people I see get injured doing any of those three, it's due to an inflated ego not allowing them to use a weight they can handle. As long as he doesn't try to squat 500 lbs right away, he will be fine.

I had my younger brother doing five exercises - bench, deads, squats, bentover rows and military press - he did quite well.

yup, keep it simple. Both for safety's sake, and since he is new to lifting. you dont want to overload him.

Start him with simple compound lifts. Up his protein. Get him to train maybe 3 days a week. Keep the reps above 8, and push himself hard.

his body will do the rest, especilly at 15. YOu have to be a gimp to not gain at that age
