training for swimmers

I have been weight training off and on (thanks to college) since high school. At this point (age 24) I have decided to give up the hopes of being...well, Arnold. And have decided to take advantage of the gifts I have been given. I have been training (I think) for marathons. This has only been for about one month and I am running about 10 miles, six days a week with weight training on only my legs twice a week. My long term goal is to compete in triathlon events. Realistically I do not see that for another 15 years or so, but I would like to focus my 2 day/week weight training on a swimmer's weight training schedule. The only swimming I have done in the past is naked and drunk. So, do any of you know what workouts are good for first time swimmers?

Thanks-
Matt

I'd suggest doing some reading on swimming as form is very important. Starting out you aren't going to need a training program since you'll be exhausted after just a few laps. Get the proper form and get used to swimming, then later on develop a program that involves different speeds and distances and maybe different strokes.

Incidentally, I think you're running too much. If you're running 10 miles a day practically ever day then your legs are not going to have the time to recover so your lifting is basically pointless. Unless you meant you're running 6 times a week for a total of 10 miles a week.

Why wait 15 years for your goal? If you really want to do it, you can be ready A LOT sooner than that.

If you haven't done much swimming before, i'd advise you to just start by doing laps with a kickboard ( kicking only). Just get your kick rhythm happening, then work on your breathing, then your arms.

a pair of swim fins(or flippers) will help you out heaps too.

as far as weight training, just keep it simple and stick to the basics.......bench,dead and squat

how about this

Thanks a lot guys!

Jes131, I am running 10 miles per day six days a week. So, you think 60 miles per week is too much? Based on my pure weight training experience I do agree I need time for my muscles to recover. This cardio training is completely new to me!

And, yes I am VERY serious about this triathlon stuff. I will be finished school in May. Then I will finally have the money to afford a bike. That is why that is not spoken of. Anyway, if you think I could get this done in less than 15 years then I will take that boost of confidence you gave me and get right on the swimming technique. I like that idea.

And Inked1, good call on the board!!! I might look gay doing that, but my older brother is already calling me a fag because of my quire running shorts, haha. For real though man, that is a very good idea.

So, what do ya’ll think of this:

Sunday – run 8 miles
Monday – run 4 miles
Tuesday – morning - light weights, afternoon – swimming with board
Wednesday – OFF
Thursday – morning – light weights, afternoon – run 12 miles
Friday – swimming with board
Saturday – WATCH COLLEGE FOOTBALL

This is all just for starts. Again, thanks for ya’lls help. And don’t forget to pray for the GOOD people from my hometown; New Orleans. Peace-

Matt

Your new program looks pretty good. Once you get your bike and all, find a short, easy triathalon and train towards that. It's always good to have a goal that will keep you on schedule.
