Varicocelectomy for low T?

Hi, everybody. I used to lurk on the forum a long time ago for BB info, but I hadn't been on in a few years. I recently came back to get some info on low T. I'm finding some great stuff here and I want to thank everybody. So, here's my question.

I have an appointment with my urologist on Wednesday to get my T checked. I won't bore you with my story, but I have all of the symptoms of very low T and I'm really excited by the possibility of finally finding out why I've felt this way. Several years ago I had a vasectomy (I'm 42 now). A couple of years later I saw my urologist about some bad testicular pain. The result was a diagnosis of a cyst and varicocele. Nothing was done for it and I haven't felt any real pain since. Now that I'm going to see my urologist about low T I'm wondering if he might suggest varicocelectomy. I've read that T levels increase on average 115ng/dl for patients having bilateral varicocelectomy. Has anybody on this forum had that procedure and did your T levels increase? Has anybody opted for TRT rather than having the procedure? If so, why?

Thanks again, everybody. I'm very, very happy to have found all of the information on this forum!

My Dr talked me out of surgery. Said even if it worked it would still not put me into the normal range. Now been on TRT for over 3 years.

It seems like if it's possible to at least increase your body's natural production it would be worth a shot. Still, I guess I can see how a person might skip it since they'll be on TRT regardless.

I'm really psyched about my appointment tomorrow no matter what method we use.

welcome to the forum!
yes please let us know what they say and we can give feedback and help possibly.
I do agree witht he other guys.. if you are very low it might not be worth it. if border line then maybe tryit and see if that workout for you before doing hrt.
still at 40+ you might need hrt regardless, to feel the best and have best quality of life.

good luck man!

I finally got my results back. Looks like they were back several days ago, but they never bothered to tell me. I'll be sure to stay on them after my retest on Monday. So, here are the results:

Total Test: 1.9 ng/ml
Free Test: .05 ng/ml
Bioavailable: 1.08 ng/ml

I guess that translates into a level of 190 ng/dl? I'm really relieved that it came back low, because if it was normal I'd have had to go back to figuring I'm going to feel this way for life. Bring on TRT!

Right now I'm doing 50mg Test Cyp IM weekly. I thought I was going to be doing 100mg, but my doctor is very conservative. I've head one injection so far (my second is tomorrow) and, honestly, I think I already feel it. I'm getting my levels done again in a couple of weeks and we'll see about increasing the dose from there.

The doctor never even mentioned varicocele or any interventions other than TRT. That's fine by me. At this point the only other thing he has mentioned is my liver test numbers coming back high. My research has lead me to understand that non-alcoholic fatty liver disease is not uncommon in low Test men and that TRT has been shown to eliminate it.

So far, so good. I'll keep on with the updates. Thanks again to everybody for all of your help!

Any updates? 100mg / week did not do it for me, either by lab work or symptoms. I was just increased to 200 mg/week. Hope things have improved for you but I suspect you'll need to come up quite a bit from 50 mg given your baseline levels
