A little off topic, but you guys seem knowledgeable in all aspects of fitness et al.

My 13yoa son is actively training and has a great muscle structure, he is just very skinny. I have purchased him weight gainer and he is drinking two shakes a day (about 800 calories each). My question, does anyone see anything harmful in this?

I dont see anything harmful there bro but I agree with balboa, regular food is best. Pay close attention to fat gain cause you dont want a fat kid lol

i'd rather use food!!! and if he did use a weight gainer, like in between meals,i would make my own, that way you wont get all of the "fillers" and sugar, and cheap carb sources......its simple and very good to make your own,

2 scoops of regular Whey protein
2 tablespoons of Natural Peanut Butter
1 cup of Steel rolled old fashioned Oatmeal
2% Milk or whole milk

best weight gainer shake there is

get MOST of his calories from food and mabe throw in a few shakes . get him a QUALITY multi vitamin , i use twinlab daily ones myself. make sure hes getting plenty of rest/sleep , he cant burn the candle at both ends and grow properly.

Giving the kid a shake here and there to make up for missed calories isn't bad, but he'll get a lot more nutritionally (vitamins, fiber, heart health, etc) from eating more real food.

There is a lot going on at age 13... If test levels aren't high, I'm sure they will be soon.. If he is motivated, as you are... A simple bulking diet would be great I think.

Hell at 13 I could eat anything and not gain a pound. Wonder if I had ate right if all my working out would've bulked me up.

My son is simlar. 13 YO, 5'11 and 135. He gained 10 pounds in the last couple of months when we increased the number of meals he eats. We both have very fast metalbolisms, and although eating more often increases our metabolism, it also causes us to be hungry all of the time. Of course, this is very difficult to eat that often when he is school. If you can get him to eat 6 + times per day, it's not a problem to throw a shake in there since it's tough to eat all the time at that age. Make sure he takes in some high glycemic carbs right after training, then follow that up with Whey protein 20 min later to take advantage of the insulin spike.

an important note that hasn't been mentioned...no OVERHEAD lifts or SQUATS for a kid of that age...

and as for food keep it more to real food as much as possible, weight gainer etc. are mainly full of sugars... if u must go that route try bullseyes's recipe

I would think for a 13 yr old, this would work best

1. pushups eod
2. chinups eod
3. and "run like u stole something" for 30 min everyday

China, I am curious as to why you are saying no squats? My whole jr high football team was doing squats at age 12 in the weight room.

I started lifting around that age and main thing is keep it simple don't over do it.. Practice proper from while lifting and just have fun with it.. Read about proper nutrition and stay consistent.. As far as the weight gain shakes i would stay away from them or keep them to a minimum he's goin to grow anyways.. Eat balanced meals and throw some protein shakes in there with a good multi vitamin. If your dead set on the weight gainer choose one thats lower in sugar and take half the recommend amount every now and then.. Good luck stay focused.
