How would someone who has never used a belt go about selecting one?
start by telling us what you want out if a belt and how much you figure to invest . a good belt can be expensive 50-75$ but on the other hand one in that pricerange will lsat almost forever and will give you the most support

What do I want out of it? The ability to squat and deadlift when d-bol is giving me horrible back pain.

How much do I figure to invest? Whatever it takes.

bro i love lever belts , once properly adjusted you lock it down with the flick of a wrist , and unlock it just as quickly , no wrestling with the prongs . and because its comfortable in the unlocked position you can just leave the belt on until time for the next set and then lock it down . inzer is a good brand and titan and rickey dale crain carries them as well , try crainsmuscleworld.com or monstermuscle.com or just try a search on the net for powerlifting equipment

I was about to ask what belt I should get. I've never used a belt before, always felt it was better to focus on form and keep everything tight. But with me trying to break into the 500's on deads and getting my squat up I'm thinking I should get a good belt.

So if money is no object would that Lever comp belt on monstermuscle.com be a good one? 13mm?? I'm 5'11" 210 with a 34" waist. So what size would I buy? I'd like to get down to a 33" waist but I get as high as 36" when bulking. I wouldn't want to have to buy two belts. I'm guessing the large would still be tight enough. Thoughts??

I only use them for my heaviest squats and deadlifts.

A buddy at the gym is a 4 time national champ powerlifter. When he goes heavy he has somebody help him get his belt as tight as possible. His is the same width all around and thick, I believe that is standard for powerlifting.

that belt would be what i suggested ,give them your waist size thay shoulkd be able to help you pick the size ,and you wont need 2 belts unless you have massive weight swings the belt is very adjustable [ my belt has been adjusted to fit me at anywhere from 240 pounds all the way up to the low 300s ]

I honestly don't use a belt very often. When I do use one, it's only when I'm trying a heavier squat.
When I do use my belt, it's a leather, double prong with a cushioned lumbar area. :)

I'm due for a new belt soon. Mine is starting to fall apart, so I think next time I will spend a little extra cash and get a high quality lifting belt.

go with a lever belt bro , i love mine :)

I just got a new double prong cardillo belt that tapers to the front. It is very comfortable.
I find the belts that taper to the front are better for higher reps then the ones that are the same size all around becase it is easier to breathe.
If you want a belt that is going to last I suggest you go with a leather one.

i have a double prong but dont use it much anymore

i dont use a belt and lifting straps much

i got very dependant on them.

will use them if i go extremely heavy though

belts arent any different than anything else , you can abuse them , i have only used a belt for squats , deadlifts ,and goodmornings . i dont wear one for warm ups just for work sets . i have tried to bench in my belt but didnt like it , some powerlifters wear a cheapo thin belt while benching just to hold the bench shirt in place .i used to refuse to use straps but the gym im at now only goes up to 130 pound dumbells so i do my db rows at the end of my workout so that my back is preexhausted and by then my grip is shot so i have stooped;) to using a strap
