Hey all.
Just figure I would jump in here since I was one of those huge fat guys that guzzled diet soda all day long. I was 100+ pounds overweight with body fat easily into the 40+ range.
Anyway, I was definitely the guy at Burger King who ordered the #2 (double Whopper) combo with cheese (extra large please) and 2 apple pies with a large diet coke. I promise you that the diet coke in no way made me feel like I was cutting calories and justified any extra food. For some reason, I could not stand a full sugar/HFCS, non diet soda. I was constantly drinking diet soda all the time as it doesn't fill you up or sit heavy in your gut like a regular soda does. I just liked it much better. I'm going to eat the double cheeseburger no matter what and didn't give a flying fuk about calories. I can't speak for other obese people but I do believe there is something in diet soda or a chemical mechanism that may be addictive to obese people? I have no idea but I drank the shit by the gallon. When I finally did lose most of the weight, my craving for diet soda completely disappeared. I still drink it occasionally, but not like I used to. I clearly remember being almost addicted to it when I was super heavy. I can't explain why but it definitely had an addictive feel to it. I needed it from the time I woke up till I went to bed. I also believe it does cause a small insulin response simply from the sweet flavor on the taste buds. I can't find any proof or studies but I thought I remember hearing about that a few years ago.
Anyway, for what it's worth, when I was morbidly obese diet soda had no bearing on my food choices or caloric concerns as there wasn't any. If it's good, I'm gonna eat it, and a whole bunch of it.
