What is the board's take on diet sodas?

I did a quick 5 week cut using diet soda and very little water and dropped 11lbs. Why is there still so much hesitation regarding this stuff?

Because most people are stupid enough to get their information from blogs, newspapers, other bros, etc.

For those of us smart enough to actually look at the data behind all of this, there is no hesitation :)

I would drink them if there was one that tasted good. I drink a lot of zero-calorie drinks like Propel Zero or Powerade Zero.

Its funny, i used to hate diet sodas. But i started drinking diet pepsi years ago as i actually didnt mind it. I had a regular pepsi the other day and it tasted like absolute crap to me, compared to the diet version.

I looked at the nutritional facts on the can..........42g of sugar per 355ml hahahaha. Holy crap!!

Those carbz are GAINZ bro!

You are all better off if you drink gasoline, leaded. Those diet drinks are worst than the regular soda drinks. They have hundreds of hidden chemicals that completely alter your bodies composition and gets into your DNA and changes it for ever and not for the better and brings out the worst in you so all your defects will exaggerate. Use your common sense and stay away from those cancer/diabetes causing drinks. All of you'll should know better.

if you believe any of those LIES called nutritional facts, then I got some beautiful land I would like to sell you in the Florida swamps. Dirt cheap! your investment will triple! All those nutritional facts are LIES AND BS. This is not regulated so they can write whatever they want to fool you into buying their shit so you can walk around showing off your Diet canned soda drink.

Milton the only thing Im walking around showing off is my devilishly handsome good looks by no fault of my own. :p

On a serious note though, I do believe there is a regulation on 'diet' sodas. Anything containing 5 calories or or less can be labelled as 0 calories

Milton please tell me you haven't fallen for the media bullshit on this?

There is no evidence diet drinks cause cancer in humans.
There is no evidence diet drinks cause diabetes in humans.
There is no evidence that diet drinks change your DNA for ever lol.
And they certainly don't alter your body comp.

And remember I said CAUSE, none of this "associated" or "linked" or "correlated" crap because that isn't causation.

If you actually compare what nutritional labels say to what calorie count books and web pages say based on the weight/volume of the item. The labels are usually bang on.

you better get your head out of your ass and think for yourself. you are the one letting the media do all your thinking for you. There is tons of HIDDEN evidence to the contrary of ALL that you say. Ive been around, I know whats up. Do your own thinking. use your own frikking commons sense and dont try to sell your BS here.
Hospitals and clinics and morgues are full of people with diabetes, and cancer and your sitting there saying one thing has nothing to do with another? respect just dropped for you bro. the more some of you guys learn the stupider you get. Go figure.

its all BS, who does the lobbying? do your own thinking bro. The illusion is there for you to think that there is regulation but its all BS wake up.

I'm pretty sure that those bodies in the morgues, clinics etc will full of people who feasted on Maccy D, full fat coke and drank 10 coffees a day Milton.

I probably average 2 small bottles of diet coke/pepsi a week, so I'm not in for fighting the good fight here...
But IF I did have a taste for sodas - I'd take the miniscule risk over the guaranteed risk every time.

I agree with this. Compared to the risks we take with AAS, the risks from diet sodas and zero cal sweetners are in my opinion very small. Moderation is key to mitigating risk, just like with anything else.

I think you need to be more open minded and consider the fact that I'm basing my position on the available evidence - none of which supports your statements. I'm sorry dude but it just doesn't.

If you look at the data collectively you would notice that diet drinks, specifically artificial sweeteners, help to REDUCE energy intake - this goes completely against the "diet drinks make you fat" stuff.
Here are just a few examples proving this point:

Effect of covert nutritive dilution on the spontaneous food intake of obese individuals: a pilot study. - PubMed - NCBI - when sucrose calories were replaced by aspartame, overall caloric intake went down 25% over 14 days.

Effect of drinking soda sweetened with aspartame or high-fructose corn syrup on food intake and body weight. - PubMed - NCBI - calories went down in the diet drink group compared to sugar drinks over 3 weeks.

Sucrose compared with artificial sweeteners: different effects on ad libitum food intake and body weight after 10 wk of supplementation in overweig... - PubMed - NCBI - Diet drinks caused a slight decrease in calories vs sugar drinks causing a significant increase over 10 weeks.

In terms of the safety of diet drinks and its impact on different health parameters, again the data is against you man. For example:

Lack of effect of sucralose on glucose homeostasis in subjects with type 2 diabetes. - PubMed - NCBI - 12 week trial using MUCH higher than recommended doses of sucralose (artificial sweetener) showing no impact on glucose homeostasis OR glucose levels in type 2 diabetics.

Here is a table showing the recommended doses for different artificial sweeteners:

To put things into perspective, for aspartame (the most common artificial sweetener in diet drinks) to have the potential to be toxic to your body you would need to consume 17 12oz cans of diet soda per day.
17....

I agree that industry funded data should be viewed with scepticism. But I've been looking at this for a long, long time and I haven't found a single bit of credible evidence to suggest diet drinks cause any of the heath issues that you suggested.
Now I'm a fair guy, so if you happen to find some data suggesting diet drinks cause cancer, death, obesity, etc then by all means share it with us so we can all learn :)

the problem isn't the sugar alcohols themselves.. its that people who drink diet soda tend to eat more calories...

they think drinking diet soda gives them a hall pass to eating shit..

if you have diet soda and fast food, youre still having fast food!!!

statistically, those who drink diet soda are more likely to be obese...

Association isn't causation dude :)

You cannot say "well this guy is fat and he drinks diet soda therefore diet soda makes you fat"
You also cannot say that its the diet soda making them eat more - they were doing that anyway.

Eating a bunch of calories and sitting on your ass all day while the whole world focuses on how bad diet drinks (with super low cals) are.
Talk about missing the forest for the trees.
