What's your BEST cold remedy?

So i'm sitting here half stuffed up and feeling run down....any of you all got a remedy that you use at the onset to kick out a cold before it sets in?

When I get a cold I sit down and start drinking water by the jug. I drink it and drink it and do everything I can to urinate often and also let my sinuses drain it on out.

I have a friend that adds amino acids to his jug and another that adds tobasco sauce to his to to make it spicey and make his sinuses drain faster.

Straight water works for me and I'm usually back in the game in 24.

Zinc, vitamin c and oil of oregano. Those will shorten their duration anyway. Oil of oregano is key. Book it!

Abstract
OBJECTIVE: To review the laboratory and clinical evidence of the medicinal value of zinc for the treatment of the common cold.

DATA SOURCES: Published articles identified through Medline (1980-2003) using the search terms zinc, rhinovirus, and other pertinent subject headings. Additional sources were identified from the bibliographies of the retrieved articles.

STUDY SELECTION: By the author.

DATA EXTRACTION: By the author.

DATA SYNTHESIS: Human rhinoviruses, by attaching to the nasal epithelium via the intracellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) receptor, cause most colds. Ionic zinc, based on its electrical charge, also has an affinity for ICAM-1 receptor sites and may exert an antiviral effect by attaching to the ICAM-1 receptors in the rhinovirus structure and nasal epithelial cells. Clinical tests of zinc for treatment of common colds have been inconsistent, primarily because of study design, blinding, and lozenge contents. Early formulations of lozenges also were unpalatable. In three trials with similar study designs, methodologies, and efficacy assessments, zinc effectively and significantly shortened the duration of the common cold when it was administered within 24 hours of the onset of symptoms. Recent reports of trials with zinc gluconate administered as a nasal gel have supported these findings; in addition, they have shown that treatment with zinc nasal gel is effective in reducing the duration and severity of common cold symptoms in patients with established illness.

CONCLUSION: Clinical trial data support the value of zinc in reducing the duration and severity of symptoms of the common cold when administered within 24 hours of the onset of common cold symptoms. Additional clinical and laboratory evaluations are warranted to further define the role of ionic zinc for the prevention and treatment of the common cold and to elucidate the biochemical mechanisms through which zinc exerts its symptom-relieving effects.

Great read my friend. That's a systematic review but still very evident conclusory!

When I get a cold I do what gunner does. I drink water til the pointi dint think I can drink anymore, then I drink a bunch more. Also take an extra muti, since I'm drinking so much water. Also use Zicam when I notice I'm first getting sick. A few sprays of that stuff every three hours or so. Works best when you use it early. This goes along with what Megatron was saying because I think the main benefit of the Zicam is the zinc that is in it.

Zicam is supposed to work, but it is supposed to have a risk of damaging your sense of smell. Here is what Wikipedia says.

Zicam is a branded series of products marketed for cold and allergy relief whose original formulations included the element zinc. The Zicam name is derived from a combination of the words "zinc" and "ICAM-1" (the receptor to which a rhinovirus binds in order to infect cells).[1] It is marketed as a “completely different kind of medicine that's clinically proven to shorten a cold.” Matrixx Initiatives, Inc, which distributes the product, uses the idea of the “pre-cold” to describe when consumers should take Zicam. They define “pre-cold” as the first symptoms that signal a cold has started. Zicam launched its “Cold Monster” campaign in 2012 in TV, print and online.

Zicam was invented by Robert S. Davidson and Charles B. Hensley in the mid 1990s and is produced, marketed and sold by Zicam, LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Matrixx Initiatives, Inc.,[2][3] an American over-the-counter drug company. In 2009, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) advised consumers to avoid intranasal versions of Zicam Cold Remedy because of a risk of damage to the sense of smell, leading the manufacturer to withdraw these versions from the U.S. market.[4] The Zicam brand has been expanded to include non-zinc formulations.

The kind that used as zincum aceticum and directions say to spray into roof of mouth and or on gums. So I think/hope this one is okay.

I know there is no blanket answer obviously.....everyone is going to respond a little differently.

Vitamin C I was already pretty familiar with....

Zinc is a new one...

Austinite....why L-cysteine?
