When discussing fitness with friends

Hi everyone.

The most common theme in the conversations that I have with people I meet when it comes to fitness, is their fear of others making progress. Very few people I know are genuinely pleased for my progress in my health and appearance, especially since I used to be so extremely underweight. The majority of those that I speak to try to limit the debate and undermine my success, even some friends that I have known for many years and thought highly of before (and I aint buff by any means).

Just wondered what other people's experiences are when it comes to chatting to friends and people you meet about health & fitness?

I'm beginning to think that I need to be much more selective when it comes to talking about gym/fitness stuff.

Your thoughts appreciated.

I don't even want to talk about it with friends because most of them are completely ignorant about the topic and believe whatever they hear on TV from Dr. Oz. It also usually leads to them saying about how they need to eat healthier/start exercising more, which they don't.

These don't sound like good friends. Good friends and family will support your goals and pursuit of happiness, whatever that is. Remember this if you ever decide to get married. My wife fully supports any of my endevours and it makes all the difference in the world.

Thanks for the replies :)

Yeah, thankfully these "friends" have now been dropped thankfully. It just shocked me how underhand some people can be and the lengths they are willing to go to to "get one over" on me (and I didn't ever mention steroids to them, just gym work when they asked).

Thanks again,

Yes, exactly my situation. I only have one friend that is a fitness freak like I am and he can eat jack in the box 6 times a day and stay ripped. All the others are just fat and can justify in their own minds that eating fried chicken is good because of protein. Kinda makes me mad!

I love the people who say, "I'd go to the gym, but I don't want to get all bulky". WTF? As if doing 1 push-up suddenly turns them into Arnold. I don't even talk to people about it as the level of misinformation among most people is dizzying nor can they appreciate what it takes.

When I mention something about fitness most of the time, regardless of how I looked, people took it as I was talking down to them or took me as some health nut with a hobby. They didn't realize the dangers of the food they eat or the products they use. The only area of fitness I like to conversate about is nutrition. Any type of training helps and peoples genetics and how they feel during exercise effects them differently than others. The one thing everyone can get into to keep you healthy, happy, and active is nutrition.

That's some shitty friends bro! When I suddenly dropped 30 pounds I got nothing but compliments and questions on how I did it. Will be interesting to see what they say when I suddenly gain 30 back in muscle lol.
But I can understand the sick nature of people wanting to put down something that makes them look bad in comparison... Something they just aren't willing to work for themselves. Be it itentional or not, it's a disgusting fact of human nature.
