It's not about just tearing the muscle down, you need to provide a stimulus which is enough to force a physiologic adaptation but that is also
Recoverable from. 20reps would be the highest range for reps and that works anaerobic endurance not so much strength. I'd do the big compounds at 3-5sets of 1-8reps and accessory work for 2-4sets of 8-15. If you want to work some muscular endurance, do some 20rep squats with 60-70% of your 1RM.
