Would someone please explain to me how deadlifts work back?

So how exactly do deadlifts target the lats and everything else in the back. I mean, it is obvious to me that they hit the low back very well, but I just don't see or feel how the help develop the V taper like everyone says they do. When I do deads, with proper form, I feel them more in my legs (something like the burn I get from lighter sets of squats) and low back, but nothing in the upper back. Thanks.

Just keep working them till your legs get stronger. Shouldn't take long. Weights go up pretty quick w/ deads. Make sure you shrug at the top, and let the weight round your shoulders at the bottom to get a stretch.

If you want to isolate your lats, do an isolation exercise.

That's exactly my point. Why does everyone say to do deads to work the lats and the rest of the back. I do them on my leg day, not the back day, simply for that reason.

I can't explain it...but...I do know that...

wow killer back. deadlifts pump my back up big time. i contract at the end of the motion with my lower back. i use the viz in my bean to help feel it. and when ur going heavy it works very well.

next time u are doing them,,, look in the mirror on a side veiw and u'll see your lats pumping and hard as a rock, deads are great for lats... holding any heavy weight in your hands is.

i have a pump in my lats before i even touch my rows ect just from deadlifts . i agree your not feeling it because your legs are doing the work to much .

you say you do them on leg day so thats the problem . after legs your legs are workin to hard to keep up since pre-exhausted from prior work like squats or whatever they cant keep up with trap/lat power and hence , forced to do to much work and lats arent getting hit properly from them .
you need to do them 1st on back day . go ahead and try it you have nothing to loose . use sets of 8 to 10 reps and im sure youll get a pump , work them hard so you are yelling up them last few reps & youll be pumped 3 working sets later . dont forget to flex your lats at top too !!!
