Any Ideas

Hello, All

I had surgery on my back about 10 months ago. I have finished physical therp. My Doctor has released me. However, not to do much of anything. No running, no lifting of more than 25lbs. I have always been in shape, always played sports, worked out with the men in my unit in the Military. I scuba dive..well use to. You name it. My problem is since this surgery I have put on 20-30lbs. I will be the first to admit..I kinda hit the "feel sorry for myself bottom." I was hurt on duty, and can no longer be in my career field, I am listed as 7% disabled which is why I can no longer do my prior job. I was home ridden, and bed bound for months. I kinda just felt useless. . Anyway I will stop whinning and get to it. I need to find a way I can cut this fat off me while doing what I am allowed to do. which will help my back more (less weight) and help me..maybe push the limits the Doctor has set so I can get back to my normal active, healthy life. And healthy size. Any suggestions. I am a 5'9" female that is usally around 140-142. I don't even want to type where I am now. Any Ideas.

It sounds like you need to get motivation somehow.

Post up a diet and training plan you have devised for yourself with your level of knowledge. We can take it from there and tweak it for you. We will tell you what is good and bad with it.

I don't know how to give you the motivation you need quite honestly. I'm not sure what you are really asking to tell you the truth.

this might help with motivation.
i was 19yrs old when i broke my back L4 L5 i had surgery the works gained weight lots of it. i was not able to lift more then 25 lbs just like you.
i started by going for walks. this helped loosen the back muscles and then it went to speed walking and then jogging. it helped get me out and active. i didn't want to hurt the back again so it laid off weights and didn't do any weight trainning but i done basice streches from the therapist. this helped with the muscles and i work on this for 2 yrs and then i was ready for the weights and i just started slow. just being active and eat right worked very well and kept me loose.

You should ask the doc if swimming is okay for your back. I'd suggest elliptical since it's almost stress free on joints but maybe you should take is slow at first to be on the safe side. Swimming is a really safe and effective way to get back in shape after injury. Some therapists use water training exercises for things like this. I'd ask the doc cuz with a clean diet & swimming 4-5 days a week you'll lose the weight in no time

good luck

Some great advice here. Start slow and be patient. You can't climb Everest in an hour. Set your goals 2 pounds at a time instead of a 25 pound loss. You stay more motivated that way.

Walking and swimming....good stuff guys.

Hi EJKID,
i'm a physical therapist, please post up more specific details, such as what injury you had suffered, what back surgery procedure did you have, and also what your diet is like currently.
if you do not feel comfortable sharing some of these details on this thread, please feel free to send me a personal message.
:)

oh, and this is a little known fact in the fitness world, but the eliptical is possibly one of the worst machines for anyone with Low Back, Hip or even knee issues.
the explanation is rather complex and based on Biomechanics of our joints and how they are actually designed for impact.
bottom line, avoid the eliptical.
i know it is marketed as good for your joints but it really isn't.
swimming and walking however are usually great.

but again if i were to answer you i really need more info so that i can help you address your specific needs.
and if you can give me the exercises you were given as rehab homework that would help too

IM :)
