I always felt a pain in my shoulders as well when benching. Now I do incline flies first (3x12-10) in my routine to preexhaust the chest and shoulders. After that incline bb bench. Works wonders now.
No reason at all to stick with flat benches unless they're working; for some they work very well, for others i'd say go with other things and see including dumbell presses and flyes for a few months or a year.
