I want to give major props and my congrats to Big Gene. He has done something amazing, that nobody else at this point can do.

I mean, a little over a year ago, I beat his 804 at a WPO meet with an 810 bench. He has 200 pounds on that now. Its just flat out insane.

I keep seeing people all over the internet debating and bitching over this or that deatil, Gene's shirt, etc.

Let me tell you, I have seen his shirt, it is a heavy duty custom shirt, but its not all that the critics want it to be. Gene has learned to get big support from that shirt, and he has learned how to bench with that much support.

I can get a double denim or poly shirt from any company, do some simple modifications, and get as much or more support than Gene's shirt provides. I have done this with a Karin's double denim. I can tell you right now, that kind of shirt support will seriously blow your eyeballs out. I have basically passed out on the bench from the extreme pressure. That kind of huge support makes a shirt nearly impossible to use. If you haven't tried it, you don't know.

I say this, because the reason Gene can bench more than anyone else is not the shirt, its not steroids, its not even the haircut. It because he has learned the technique and built the strength to do it.

Why can't I bench a grand? Because I haven't figured out how. Same thing with 900. The difficulty level as you increase weights is almost exponential. The difference in difficulty between 800 and 900 is like the difference between 500 and 800. Its huge. I have never held 1000. I'm not anywhere near ready to even try that. I've had 900 on the bar 3 times in comp, and a few times in training. Its freakin' heavy.

So to all you haters out there, think about this: Gene is my #1 opponent right now in benching. His best contest lift is now 146 pounds higher than mine. So I'm not a real big threat at this time, but Gene will still hand off to me in training, and he is always a nice guy when I see him. There is no big rivalry among us. Right now, Gene is the man. I'll stand up and say that anytime. And I know he would do the same if our roles were reversed.

So leave the guy alone, say your proud of him for his hard work and amazing accomplishment, and drop the trash talk.

I absolutely agree with lattimer. This guy does have a head on his shoulders, and he sounds like a real peoples person. This guy is a prime example of what we call "Sportmanship"

It's not that people don't respect him for putting up 1000 lb bench, thats just fucking amazing. It's more that I would like to see a video of a raw bench record being broken a lot more than someone covered in equipment. I'd rather see that same guy doing as much as he can without the shirt, because thats the way I lift, but the equipment is a part of the sport and I respect that. It's just that having never put a bench shirt on, many bbers don't know how much, or how little help it gives the lifter.

Any idiot trash talking him for the shirt is like when I hear newbie people say the only reason Ronnie Coleman's so damn big is the GH and the massive amounts of gear. If it was just the shirt in benching, or just the roids in powerlifting, everybody would be that big/strong.

Many of them wont know either, because benching 700 without a shirt is putting yourself at serious risk.

I totally respect what gene's doing, and am amazed by it as well. He holds the shirted record, making him the best at what he does plain and simple, people always like to hate on the dominator of a sport......im sure its mostly out of jealousy. However I would prefer to see a raw # as an accurate measure of one's strength because like some others have said, you really don't know how much the shirt is giving you or if one person gets more from it than another. Gene is a pioneer of his sport, year after year putting up weights that no one else has ever done.......Hats off to Gene.

the human shoulde can only stand so much and there are numerous people who have the strength to surpass that . when your talking benching 700 pounds raw thats a injury waiting to happen .
nice shop of respect for gene . even though he lifts in a shirt and not raw like you prefer instead of being a hater like some people you tipped your hat to the man , well done :)

in order to have a big raw bwnch you have to put your self at such a large risk week in and week out. we have some guys at our gym who bench 5 raw and one guy at another local gym who hit a 650 raw. but the years of pounding will ruin the shoulders. the shirts protect the shoulders as well as adding lbs to the lift. but unless you have tried to bench in a shirt it aint as easy as you think. some guys get 0 out of a shirt. if you used to benching 405 raw and then you put a shirt on and take 550 out of the rack, guess what? the shirt gives the bottom of the lift but you still gotta lock it out. and you still got 550 in your hands. when the spotter lets go of the weight and its you and the weight, your shoulders are pinned to the bench from the extra weight, there is a lot going thru your mind. like i am gonna die? is my larynx gonna get crushed? are the spotters gonna save me if this gets out of hand? its another world. its not even a bench anymore. its trying to get this damn weight to touch my chest without me spilling over on my belly then when i finally do touch how am i gonna get it off me and locked out?
