Brand New To Lifting

i've been wanting to bulk up and get cut for a while now. i've lifted a little in the past, but i really want a kick ass body.

im 5'6", 155 lbs. my bench press max is about 215. my arm (when flexed) is close to 15 inches. where should i start in order to see some gains in my strength and my size?

also, i can see very little definition in my abs, how can i change this?

i try to eat mostly protein foods and avoid the sugars/carbs.

also, i run about 3 miles about 3 times a week. will this affect me building muscle?

thanks

its somewhat hard to bulk and get cut at the same time unless your a total NOOB..getting abs is about diet and cardio..however you say you can see "very little" definition in your abs..any even a little would imply that your not fat..so if i were you i would look to add mass first before trying to cut..there are some sticky's at the top of the page with routines..5x5 is very good and in pullinbigs sticky look on page six for his routine..both are excellent..see which one fits your schedule best..

I agree that 5 x 5 routine is a must as its helped me pack on the size and strength. Basic compounds are the way to go.

So, what is the best way to structure a week based on using the 5x5?

for example: should monday be a chest/triceps day and do a 5x5 for each? or is there a more used way to schedule workouts?

Also, when doing a 5x5, do you stay with the same weight throughtout all 5 sets?

thanks a lot!!
