Brazilian Jui Jitsu

google Naga...... the tournaments are set up by how much time you have been doing the sport.Have you wrestled at all?I think I learn more by going live

My wife won't let me try shit out on here.

I downloaded some awesome BJJ torrents and I want to try some shit (ie. armbar from back control, triangle from back control, and a couple sweeps) but she won't let me.

I am thinking about picking up some mats and setting them up in the basement to do some drills. My neighbor comes to some BJJ classes, so he will be in for some mat time.

Tatami Surfaced Puzzle Mats

LOLz.. You've gotta take a different angle. Tell her it's for her benefit. You're going to teach her basic self defense and techniques that will help her over power an attacker :)

I just started about a month ago and I enjoy with gi compared to no gi. I get my ass hand specially with no gi. Do you guys have any trick on getting passed the gaurd alot easier?

Practice, Practice, Practice

I am short and stocky, so guys can break my guard pretty easy as I can't lock my ankles very tight.

Then I roll with tall thin guys and I have a bitch of a time breaking their legs apart. Most the time I get past guard by avoid subs when they attmpt one. Although I do actively try and break guard.

What are you guys doing to try and pass? Sometimes lazy guys like to close their gaurd and just kind of lay there resting while you squirm.
Here's a couple things I do to counter that...
Try a can opener.. reach up with both hands and grab the back of his head and pull putting his head into your chest/stomach. Usually he'll release then you can try and pass.
If he's longer/leaner/flexible and that doesn't work, I like to sit back a bit and dig an elbow into the inside of one of his knees. This hurts very much and is pretty powerful if done right, he'll release and usually that leg will end up flat agains the mat... now put your inside knee through and sort of sit out while driving your hips into his.. You should now be in side mount with an under hook.
The key is to be tight, relaxed, but explosive when you start something.

I'm the same way, short and stocky. :) Try the elbow to the inside of their knee, they'll unlock..lol :) We have our advantages to.. longer guys are a bitch to roll with and they can easily attempt a submission but they have a very hard time finishing on shorter/stocky guys because we have less limb to work with, are usually a little more powerful, and can stay close, compact, and tight, which is key.
Also, improvise... let your mind turn and think of ways to manipulate guys you have a hard time with, then ask your instructor what they think.. It's a technical thinking mans sport... Love that about it. :)

thanks guys I'm also short and stocky but for some reason my elbows flare out and when i try to drive that elbow in his thigh i feel like it's not doing anything, i'll keep trying. Like you said practice, practice, practice. Would you suggest lifting weights while rolling everyday?

rolling and lifting everyday usually works for me. Most days I get a good lift in in the morning, then have a big lunch and hydrate throughout the day. after that ill probably roll for a few hours then get stonned (or sometimes vice versa).

Just make sure warm up pretty well before you start rolling.

sometimes you do notice the difference in strength if you've had a serious back day or any kind of power/olympic workout that morning. but like you said, if you're a short stocky guy then id roll anyway and use it as a chance to force yourself to work on something else to compensate for not being @ 100% fresh

not an expert here, but definitely having strong core/hip would help.

not to mention grip.

i'm currently training my, bluntly, my fat friends the basic of grappling and to be honest, having a 220 pounder on me, being 160, is difficult and really have to adjust to stuff.

it's all good ^=^

i would say this: keep everything simple and basic and that's really it.

also, there are a lot of people who thinks grappling is easy because...watching it from a screen does seem easy to copy..but no ^-^

sad no cheap/near training centers here in my place. quite sad.

and before it gets out of hand, i'm not a certified coach nor do I charge my friends money. I do it for fun and the fact that I can use them for training is all good :3 they enjoy it, i enjoy it..there's no harm..

We went over calf cutters again the other night. Love this submission. Low risk of damage, easy to get, and so god damn painful almost anyone will tap to this submission. You can get them from numerous positions. We went over them taking the back w/one hook in, from half guard, and from a point where an opponent stands up in your guard. You don't see these much in MMA/UFC but we learned some ways to use it in mma-jits and I think will work.
I posted some links below, plus you can type calf cutter into youtube and learn other ways to get this easy submit.

the reson you dont see these types of subs in mma is because you put yourself out of position for no reason, try to finish this as somebody start elbowing you in the head. Its a cool sub to use against someone with little to no experiance though

I learned a sick sub on the weekend.

You have your opponent in side control. Lets say he is on his back and you are on his right side.
-Slide your left arm over his right shoulder and grab the back collar of the Gi
- His arm should be pinned between your left arm and left thigh.
- Put all your weight on your left leg
- Now put your right knee on his belly, this is bait.
- He will try and push your knee off his belly with his left hand. When this happens grab it and pin the hand down on his belly.
- You now have his right arm trapped, his left hand pinned down, and all your weight on your left leg.
- In one move, pull up on your left arm and swing your right leg around and under his head. This will raise the head and give your leg room.
- MOUNTED TRIANGLE, lock it up!
