Can you train with a rotator cuff tear ?

i have a nasty shoulder injury, but the xrays showed nothing...
i am now waiting for an opening for treatment on a sports clinic...

i just have this question, because i am worried about how serious the injury is ?

can you train if you have a rotator cuff tear ? ...or is the pain to hard ?

because, i CAN train, its hurts a lot, but as i get warm it helps a little..
i ask because i am afraid that i could have a cuff tear, and the tendon might break ??

what do you people think ? any advice ?

Thx for helping.

woo boy... if you are injured id just rest... because if you are still waiting on a diagnosis then you could possibly make things worse :( a friend of mine did that, and it turned out he had a seperated shoulder and had to get a cortisone shot :( id also recommend an MRI, it will show you any damage to any sort of soft tissue in your shoulder :) unfortunatly they require a doctors recommendation (at least where im from anyways)

yeah, im am waiting for the sportsclinic, my doc send me there.

just rest you say, but i have had this injury for 3+ years...tried rest and massage and more, i did not help....and i dont feel like quitting training for good :(

btw. its only my chest workout thats a problem, i only do sidelat and bendover sidelat for sholuders, and they dont hurt

back-legs-biceps-triceps dont hurt either....BUT CHEST IS MY WEAKEST BODYPART ! (whiiine) :)

but do you KNOW if you have a cuff tear ? wont the pain be intolerable ?

oh wow... 3 years...
hmm ok... and its only on chest that your shoulder hurts? what chest exercises hurt it? when you bench are your elbows flared out? it could just be a form problem :) if it was a cuff tear i would imagine that it would be something that is flamboiantly obvious... with inflamation and the like.. but im no doctor, so i do not know for sure. but yes, i agree with you that the pain would be intolerable and you wouldnt be able to do any sort of shoulder workout.

at first it was only flat benchpress and behind the neck presses (3 years ago) but right now its all presses in chest (and shoulder)...pullover is fine and to some degree cable crossovers is fine too.

today i used PERFECT form and 12 reps in all chest movements, still hurt pretty much until i got halfways...then the pain was a little better.

good sign ? bad sign ? "sigh" the possibility of not beeing able to train chest at all (forever ?), allmost makes me cry ! :(

Excellent advice all the way around ;)

1. Rest; don't even attempt to work out! Performing ANY exercise that includes the shoulder girdle whatsoever passively or actively; directly or indirectly.....you're asking for an aggravation of an already delicate situation.

2. ICE the hell out of it 15 minutes ON/45 minutes OFF as many times a day as possible. Do NOT go go to sleep with ICE on however....it can make things worse; can lead to "frozen shoulder syndrome".

3. DO NOT use heat even though it feels GREAT!!!! You're simply inviting an extra blood supply to an area that is alreay inflammed!

3. I'd even avoid stretching at this point until an accuarate diagnosis can be given. You mnay further tear any ligaments, tendons, muscles that have already been injured.

4. Get an MRI asap. X-Rays definitely don't tell the whole story!

5. PM me when you get the MRI results.

Thank you very much for responding on my PM. :)
I will take your advice on rest and ice, not happy about the chest-rest (currently day 15 on a 10 week AS cycle)

What does MRI stand for ? im from denmark and will then find the danish word for it...in denmark doctors are free, but you sometimes have to wait long for special treatment.

is is stupid to massage my shoulder with menthol massage cream (dont know a better word :) ) ?

I perform some rotater cuff exercises 2 times a week, is it ok to use exercises that dont hurt ? any exercises that dont hurt ?

I will keep you posted bro !

Thx a lot !

Die$eL~Man -> i only do sidelat and bendover sidelat for shoulders, havent pressed for years ! ...because of the pain...delts are pretty good any ways. :)

Thx for the input so far everybody, i will let you know how it goes.....it seems that i will have chickenbreasts once my rotator i ok (if ever) LOL ( sigh :( )

After 13+ years of training (longest break 3 weeks -> knee surgery) it is hard to not train a specific bodypart !

you could squat a lot. when i had a shoulder injuriy i worked legs and back with great success.

great advice.
just because your shoulder is hurting green, doesn't mean you can't work your legs and back. But definitely take time off the other exercises involving shoulder work; you won't regret it.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging

It's called an "MRI" or "MR" in Denmark as well

You should be fine although a DEEP tissue massage from a massage therapist/masseuse is NOT a good idea at this time!

....they shall be worked ! :D:D

oh wow... that is a long long long time :( thats gotta be hard to even think about going that long without training... i know i would die lololol

here is my plan :

1. no chest or delts for the next 14 days.
2. ice, ice, ice whenever i get the chance (bought a jellypack you can put in the freezer).
3. eat fishoil and glucosamine.
4. try light chest-delts training after 14 days rest (if it feels safe).
5. get the examination at the sportsclinic (4 months ?? WTF ??)
6. take my TEST + EQ shots in the shoulder ??? ( is that stupid ? )

7. Cry a lot :( (...and possibly masturbate instead of working chest-delts) LOL :D

Any comments to that plan ? ..anyone ?

shooting in the area will not make any difference, unless you injecting dmso directly into the joint area.

go to a reg ortho if you dont want to wait 4 months.
