Cardio Help

Hi there,

I need some suggestion regarding cardio for a person who has terrible knees and gets regular cordisone shots in her knees just to help kill the pain and move the joints.

This girl I know has come to me requesting help. She is 52 and was very active throughout her life. She now has to get cordisone shots in her knees to help her with the pain and joints. Her doctor has told her that she can't do treadmills, bikes, or stairmasters. She is gaining wieght and is looking for other ideas to do cardio. She is sticking to her diet but really with little to no movement you are bound to gain weight.

I have recommened possibly going to aquasizing. But she has heard that you will still gain weight because your body keeps the fat to keep warm in the water. Is this true? Does anyone else have any suggestions. Her doctor isn't being much help.

Thanks ppl.

She can't even do bikes?? I was gonna suggest eliptical trainers b/c thats not hard on knees. I'd suggest swimming then. I've never heard of your body keeping the fat to keep warm in the water but thats just me tho.

I would have her try the eliptical. Depending on how heavy she is the loss of weight through initial dieting should take some stress of her knees to begin with. I have not heard personally known anyone with knees that bad except a football coach in hs, and he is now in a wheelchair i beleive.

Has she tried the elyptical machine? I would also probably suggest water exercise if she can't do the elyptical.
As jcp2 stated, as she takes some weight off, it will take some stress off her knees so it's definitely important that she sticks to her diet. Is she doing any resistance training?
