Exertion headaches

Had my first real scare in the gym this past week. I was training arms on wednesday when i felt a shap throbbing pain in the back of my skull. I bent down to release the ez curl bar and thats when the headache struck. I was able to shake it off and finsh my workout after resting for 10 minutes.

I rested on thursday and attempted to hit chest hard friday. After 3 warm up sets i laid into about my 80% max on the flat bench. After the 7 rep i got another headache. This time it was 10x worse. It felt like blunt force to the back of my skull. It caused my ears to ring, i saw black blips and bubbles, nausia, and throbbing pain.

I called off work the next day because the headache had not subsided. I ended up at the er and got a ct scan. Everything came back clean and i got no real explination from the dr. I plan to take this next week off and start again after thanksgiving.

I just got my Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) meds and really want to train hard, dont want these headaches to slow me down.

The first headache was from a morning session on my day off, dehydration is possible. Nothing was out of the ordinary for the second attack. My brother was with me when it happened he said i might have exhaled too early while pushing up my last rep, guess my face turned a little red while straining. I guess i could work on my breathing more.

Just odd its never happened before. Ive been on the same 5 day split with my brother for the past year. We always train hard.

Your body could be telling you you need a break, could also take a few days for your body to fully rehydrate if your not drinking enough water. whens the last time you had a break from the gym?

I get these also - usually on heavy leg days. My vision blurs by the end of the workout. The blurry vision then subsides and turns into a throbbing headache. I drink tons of water, so I'm not sure what the cause is either. I was thinking strain/exertion as well.

i agree you may need a break, and to be safe brother,i would go see a neurologist, take it from someone who knows,i have severe migraines, and this has happened to me on occasion, just get a doct to get you checked out,it wont hurt brother, and be careful, drink plenty of water

Geez brother - did you ask a doc about it specifically?

oh yea, lots of times, ive had several CT scans,MRI's on my head, ive suffered from migraines since i was 17 years old, sometimes it takes a week to go away,i'll havet to lay in the bed, completely dark and no noise,i take the drug Zomig nasal spray and that usually knocks them out if i can catch them when i feel the onset of one, nealry all of them start in my neck and move up into the left part of my head in the back and starts throbbing like hell,if the zomig doesnt work,i have to go to the ER to get a shot of Morphine or Dilaudid to knock them out....

Damn man mine actually start on the left side of the back of my neck where the trap meets my neck and move upwards too. I had a problem with headaches when I was in my early teens - but they went away.

Hopefully they don't resurface - I never had issues through high school football/track and field or anything so it would be crazy if they came back now.

Do not exceed the recommended daily intake.Various studies on L-arginine have used different doses. For instance, for cardiovascular health reasons, doses from 8 to 21 grams daily have been used in divided doses. To help aid with sperm quantity and quality, doses of 10 to 20 grams daily have been used in divided doses. Doses of 5 grams daily have been used for erectile dysfunction. Doses of 1.5 to 2.4 grams daily have been used for interstitial cystitis.
Although oral supplementation with L-arginine at doses up to 15 grams daily are generally well tolerated (the most common adverse reactions of higher doses ***8212; from 15 to 30 grams daily ***8212; are nausea, abdominal cramps and diarrhea, and some may experience these symptoms at lower doses), we do not suggest using these dosages without medical guidance.
