In relation to deads or squats what should a person be able to use for Goodmornings? hopefully our powerlifting specialists will have a rough estimate!! :D

i always do good mornings after squats and deads so maxxing out isnt a option because im dead beat . i never even work up to a heavy single on good mornings . but just guessing i would say you could do a quality good morning of about 60% of your squat maxx .

theres really not a specific equation for this, you should use what feels good to you
wasnt looking for an equation lol...just a rough estimate similar to the way WSB uses the box squat to etimate a reg squat..maybe its not that linear..but this is a relatively new move for me and i want to build it up and dont think i should be shooting for a max just yet..

thanks dawg..ive been doing them after my 5x5 squat day as well..usually i do 2 or 3 sets of 5 and just bump the weight up slowly each week..

I powerlift style all my lifts(bis, tris, traps, etc) but I never did good mornings. I wouldn't use them at all because it's more of an isolation movement and you can't go as heavy as you can with other lifts. I like deadlifts for my lower back, and if you want more lower back worked, you could do deads off a rack so you dont have to use your legs at all.

bret mikesell used about 55-60% of his 1 rm on squats for reps with gms. i would suggest starting abit lower than this though. plus his 1rm squat is suited. and he squats 1141. lolololol if you ding them on squat day and you did 405 5x5 on squats then prolly 225 gms for a couple of sets of 5 or 6 will work.

if you doing them on posterior day as you main movement then 275 or 315 prolly work.

these are esitmates though and every lifter has weak spots so this may be yours. if so go lighter. you may find that 315 is not a challenge.

so in summary: i dont know what the hell i am saying. you guys have fun and be safe. =0)

Well, this is different from just about everything i have read about goodmornings, not sure where you get isolation exercise, because i have done these heavy and they sure are not an isolation exercise. Your low back glutes and hams will be shot after these. I have found out for myself that doing deadlifts consistently for a low back will stagnate my deads like nothing else. I have been stuck at around 560-590 for over a year and half. I am hopeing to make progress now since i have incorporated a ton of other posterior chain movements into my routine.

jcp you on the right track. less is more in deads. you only need to pull 1 or 2 times per month. pull thrus with the bands, gms, racks, sled work if you have one are some good assistance movements. i saw you post that you dont have a glute bench or a reverse hyper. we got a reverse on the way i am stoked about that. special made by loui himself. i do glutes with the bands as well.

deads are a different bread to make progress in. bro if youll film you deads and send me some clips i may be able to help you with a break thru. there may be a slight form chnage that can get you moving again.

let me know.

thaks PB..just looking for a basis..
Jcp couldnt agree with you more sometimes to strengthen your dead you DONT need to do deads..like you said strengthening your posterior chain reaps a ton of benefits

theres a video in the training sticky of a 475 GM and like PB said Mikesell used 60% of 1rm on squats well thats over 600lbs..pretty damn heavy if you ask me

Guys, i am out of town for a week, don't miss me too much. Take care and keep the discussions rolling in here.

to start with powerlifting is deads, squats and benching. you dont have any of those listed. most PLers dont even work bis or traps directly. perhaps you have PLing confused with another type of training.

Well I just did Clean n Jerks, bench, towel bench, squat, box squat, deadlift for about 2 years but then added in bis, tris, and other stuff using powerlifting techniques. Whatever set/rep scheme I was using for my core lifts, I used that for my other bodyparts also. Added amazing weight to every one of my lifts.

Like I said I never did good mornings so I wouldn't know much about them.

I put a pad from one of the leg extension machines under my shirt over my chest. You do a bench press but stop just short of the pad, allowing you to work heavily on the eccentric part of the lift. You can generally go heavier in weight than a normal flat bench press and it helps build strenght. Clean & Jerks have helped me get a lot of strength.

ohhh jynx, ur talking bout board presses...thats the term peebs is fimilar with....towel presses...people who chew iron dont know fancy names...
