going below parallel

I meant that IF humans were able to grip the bar w/ their toes (like monkeys) like the hands do in the bench press imagine how much weight could be moved w/ the lower body. Alot of handicapped people who were born w/out arms have adapted by using they're feet in everday life activities just like regular people do w/ they're hands (eating, bathing, writing, driving, etc.) In the old school I've seen pics of dudes pressing up a bar w/ the soles of they're feet. It looked dangerous as hell tho.

A deep as possible squat w/ 275lbs will result in MUCH better results than a half ass shallow squat. I know I did high squats for yrs w/ inferior results then when I dropped the weight and hurt my ego by doing DEEP I instantly started to gain like never before.

BTW, I stumbled across an incredible article on the squat on a "granola" website that takes a totally different approach but is VERY interesting. It unintentionally goes into detail on why u must squat deep.

I hope this helps someone.

Happy Thanksgiving to all.

thanks bro, nice posts.

so youre saying I should drop the weight down and go deeper?Ill give it a shot. the trainer at my gym told me i wasnt allowed to go deep (WTF) because ill hurt my knees. i told him that parallel hurts the knees and it goes into the hips when u go lower and hes still not buying it. told me that ill just get hurt. fuck him

drop the weight down til you can go as deep as you can possibly go. if its only the bar then so be it (this is taking into consideration that you dont have a medical condition). then build from there. tell that trainer he dont know shit and to leave you alone. i got cetrified a few years ago just for the hell of it and thats what they teach in those classes. i had it out with the instructor over this and it was one of questions i missed on the test. =0) if you can film a clip of you squatting from the side and email it to me. ill take a look at it for ya.

LMAO

The only real negative that I can see with going below parallel is insanely overdeveloped glutes. Having a butt that looks like a beachball makes it difficult to buy pants.

Husky not to be a prick but I have to take exception with what U said. The "over developed glutes" theory is not all together true. If the hypothetical trainee were to do his best to maintain as upright posture as possible the quads will take the majority of the load. This all goes back to PullinBig's statement of form over poundage. The first mistake most lifters make is to focus soley on the poundage and sacrifice form. In the squat that would equate w/ rounding the back & shifting the load to the glutes while assuming a wider than necessary stance for optimum quad involvment. My thoery is 100% open to criticism as I am not competitive nor HUGE by any interpretation.

uhhhh... i think husky was making a joke. and yes squatting does give you a big ass and legs, =0)

Yes I was kidding, and I make squats the core of my workout program. I am one of the few people in the gym that looks forward to squats.

it does my heart good to see folks start training correctly and see their numbers soar and their body comp make drastic changes. i normally hang on all PLing boards but was attracted to this board because of the amount of young people here. hopefully i have made a small difference so many can save a lot of wasted time and effort trying to find their way in the gym.

as far as patience goes some areas i have patience and others i dont. =0)

Dont' worry, you have made a difference, at least with me!

well back to dude now. i spoke with 2 PT at the gym today. one specialzes in post op back therapy and the other is over all. they both agreed that unless you have an EXTREME case of ham stiffness your point dont hold water. if this is true they both said they have never seen this extrememe of a case and that other probs are present to cause this to happen. even if it was extreme you should still able able to get depth on one of the machines. more than likely you core is weak and you are lifting too much weight, which is what i said. too bad you dont live near my gym. i could have you squatting like a pro in miuntes. it may be with less weight than you like but the form would be there.

one of the PTs said it one of three things, start with the head and the other two will work themselves out. =0)

dawgy you know how we are. hey bro i am doing a meet jan 22. state apf meet here in nc. started training to day. bench only. my apf record for the new age group i'm in is only 501. in fact i have beat all the numbers in the gym cept deads. hopefully ill be able to do a full power later this year. this meet is at my gym. how sweet is that?

i would love to do an ipa meeet to as those records other than bench are even lower. the only repectable one was a 550 bench.

diet is over til jan 23. that makes me very happy. cake, milk and ice cream, yeah haw.

it will be video taped but not by me. when i am not lifting i will be helping other lifters. i can get ytou the info on how to purchase the tape if you like. the meet is on saturday and then on sunday there will be a strong man contest. and they are also talking of having a tough man on saturday night. a little sumpin fo everyone.

this is the Johnny Perry Memorial PLing and strong man which is held once per year since his death in 02. this will be number 2. the 03 meet was a huge success. several world records set and severla world record holders in attendance to help out as well. it is definately one of the years premier events in PLing. last year in attendance where steve goggins, kirk karwoski, kara the bench pess barbie doll, julie scanlon, amy vaughn, jon groves, jeff mcvicar, bill crawford, kyle robertson, glen chabott, ox mason, rusty williford, travis mash, jay rhymes, donnie thompson, geoff dolan, just to name a few. there were several 2000+ totals, a 725 bench, 900+ lb squats, 800lb deads, a couple of raw 500+ benches and some hot ass women to boot.

wish i could be there bro it sounds like a class act . im glad to hear one of ologys own will be representing :)

hopefully ill put up a good number. i have never done a bench only. so it should be a relaxed meet for me.

i noiticed i have lost PLing strength messing with this BBing stuff the last few months. i have no idea where ill be come meet day but hopefully ill get a plaesant surprise. last time i got away from the traditional PLing routine for a few months the first time i put my shirt on i hit a 10lb pr (585). that was after not having a shirt on in 8 or 9 months. i trained for the Va state meet then but had to pull out at the last minute becuase of my wifes health issues. we'll see what happens. my opener will be well above the current record though.
