You want to see air bubbles when aspirating the needle. That's just empty space created by the vacuum from pulling back the plunger. You'll either get bubbles or blood. You don't want blood. When you aspirate you should hold it for a couple of seconds just to make sure you're not near a nicked vein. Then plunge away.
A little blood upon extracting the needle is normal -- you just poked a hole in your body. A lot of blood means you probably nicked a vein on the way out. A slow, steady hand is important for a pain and complication free injection.
