They definately can be, especially the way i see alot of guys doing them. I actually put half my feet off the platform to be able to keep my knees from not going over my feet. I have bad knees, and dont have problems with hacks as long as I warm up and dont try to go too heavy(ie, I wont do a weight unless i can get it for 10 reps)
