Hack Squats, what's the point?

Unless I am focusing specifically on quad size when would I ever do hack squats when I could choose regular? What is the point of doing them?

I always have trouble doing them because my ass gets in the way, unless I use the hack squat machine.

Best leg exercise i have ever done for targeting the quads, and that includes squats. Now they don't compare to squats for overall size of the entire leg and glute.

id agree with that

they'll kill your knees. squats are safer since knee doesn't travel ahead of the feet.

I understand they are a mass builder, but if you could choose 4 sets of regular squats or 2 regular 2 hack, would you ever choose the latter? Or only for quad work?

om not sure why you have to choose lol but if you only did squats..you could build tremendous quads

that depends on your foot placement on the platform, if your feet are high, then your knees dont travel ahead of the feet

I have bad knees, and dont have problems with hacks as long as I warm up and dont try to go too heavy(ie, I wont do a weight unless i can get it for 10 reps)

They definately can be, especially the way i see alot of guys doing them. I actually put half my feet off the platform to be able to keep my knees from not going over my feet. I also used to keep my reps in the 8-20 range. 20 rep hacks are very good, and you will be able to keep your form, which is a problem for some on 20 rep squats.

guess you could do that, but I was commenting on the traditional barbell hack squats off the floor.

Only way out of that conundrum is to pick it off the rack half a foot or so off the floor- that will ensure knee doesn't travel ahead. But then, why go to all that trouble when you can do good old reg squats & box squats. Gotta admit I'm a machine hater LOL :D

Incidentally, NS, you've got awesome quad development bro. What's your off season leg workout and workout cycle ?

try supersetting squats with hack squats, never had a leg day like that i can say, havent done it since but wow, will you be walking oddly for a while.
