Heart problem CURED! Which gym?

I've had a debilitating heart disorder recently corrected, and the docs ordered me to go into high, intense weight training. 'Chop wood', they said.

Until now, I've been held back from doing sports, any physical exertion, et al. I'm in pathetic shape and I've got to get into gear FAST. My life litterally depends on it.

Stats:
30 years old
6'
200lbs
22% bodyfat

Minimal upperbody strength -- can't even do pushups

Docs recc. a gym and a trainer to kick my ass into shape. I'm not sure if I can afford one, and even still the ones available to me out here are...well..

24 Hr Fitness

and Balieys

Which one is best for somebody starting from scratch and wanting to go all out in BB'ing? They both have steep membership fees and crowded.

first off welcome to the board bro :)
visit both places and see which one you feel the most comfortable at , notice i said feel comfortable at not which one was the fanciest one . also i would be very surprised if there werent more than just 2 gyms in your area if they can support a baileys and 24 hr gym did you try the yellow pages ?
as for working out i applaud your enthusiasm but slow and steady wins the race , you didnt get out of shape overnight and you wont get back in shape overnight either . its very easy to start off like crazy and get tired/sore/overtrained and give up and quit i would start with a simple 3 day a week split on weights monday = pull day which would be back and biceps , wednesday = leg day [ dont forget that squat is the king of leg excercises ] and friday = push day which is chest , tricep , shoulders . i would do abs 2-3 days a week at your convenience and 20-30 minutes of cardio 2-3 days a week as well .

Cardio only 2-3 days a week? I thought I have to do it everyday.

Well then. Thanks. Brought a smile to my face. :)

And thanks for reminding me to check the YP. There are QUITE a few other smaller gyms in the area. I've got my work cut out for me.

What type of personal trainer certification should I look for? There are plenty of quacks out there (mail-order certs, anyone?) -- which cert/degree/designation should I look for?

i know less than nothing about personnal trainers , i started with a mentor who powerlifted and took up the sport . sorry

check out the video section for some form techniques. certificates dont make a trainer. after you get in a gym jst look around and find one that squats, benches and pulls deads. in fact other than some back work thats all you need to do for now. there is a simple routine in the deadlift sticky on page six. very similar to what dawgystyle mentioned. at this point the simplier the better. and congrats on the new beginning. a lot of folks dont get that. you are blessed.
