High Rep Workouts Burn Abdominal Fat?

Hey, im 5'8 150 pounds doing high rep excercises with low weight atm (also plenty of ab excercises). My main goal is to maintain muscle whilst toning out and shed the excess body fat on my abs. I'm at about 15% BF atm. Is this what i want to be doing to obtain my current goal? PS. contemplating throwing plyometrics in 2-3 days a week. Am I on the right track?

No. You're not going to spot reduce fat. The mantra of high reps to cut up and low reps to build muscle is broscience at it's finest. Train hard, keep your diet spotless, don't do anything too drastic and enjoy life.

High rep workouts will keep your heart rate elevated, it will burn off fat everywhere, diet clean and you'll get cut up.

Yep, I agree with the above posts. No such thing as spot reduction. It's all about diet and cardio. You see lots of people at the gym hammering away on those ab exercises. We all know they are hoping for better abs.

You want good abs, then you need to reduce your overall body fat percentage. Once you get the BF levels low enough, you will see your abs. Depending on where your body likes to store fat, some areas may be difficult to get really lean, e.g., love handles, lower back, abdominals .... These "problem" areas will probably be the last areas to reduce as you are leaning out.

I know a trainer at my local gym does not even do abs. The core gets worked during his normal power lifting workout. When he diets down for a contest he has good abs. So there must be some truth to this. That being said, I still do some ab work. I just can't bring myself to skip the ab workout all together.

150lbs and no abs??? Not trying to be rude or demeaning but you need to gain some size or you are going to look like a holocaust victim when lose enough weight to get abs.

Eat lots of dead animals, train like you are a crazy person, and get lots of sleep. I spun my wheels for my first 2 years of training trying to maintain ripped abs.

I was given some wise advice that changed my perspective: "Abs on a skinny guy are like boobs on a fat chick, they don't count."

i would look into crossfit also...great for the core

Yeah, another vote for this. Crossfit, for all its flaws, is good at building strength and body recomp. Two things to keep in mind:

1) you cannot spot-burn fat. You just can't.
2) once your heart rate gets above a certain rate (it depends on your age and your level of fitness), you are outside the aerobic zone and are running anaerobic. To specifically burn fat, you want to stay aerobic. That being said, I find it feels stupid to work out with my heart rate low. I generally keep up around 180 when I'm working hard.

Oh, and bonus:

3) abs are made in the kitchen, not the gym.

Haha that's classic

I stopped doing abs a few months ago. Do core movements that include multiple muscle groups: Deads, Squats, Flat Bench, Weighted Chins, and Military Press. Go heavy, if you can hit 6 or more reps, you're too light, bump up the weight. Your abs are worked on all of these exercises, I guarantee you will not see someone repping 400+ deads or squats without solid abs. Now you might not be able to see those abs because the dudes diet is shit, but the abs are there.

Diet, diet, diet; shit in = shit out.

High reps of certain exercises are definitely good for burning fat (kettle bell swings for example) if mainly because they get your heart rate up

Awesome lines!!
