I think I'm going to have to start using straps....

I use leather straps that I got at a Max Muscle locally.

As for deadlifting with 405, I can SLDL with 405 for reps without straps. But I know I can squeeze out 1-3 more reps WITH straps on dead type movements, and plenty more with shrugs. Shrugs is such a 'momentum' style movement as well that the bar wants to come out of your hands.

I also play guitar, and there is only so much a person should expect from their carpel tunnel and finger joints. I prefer to give them a fighting chance.

BB...we need to get together for a pulloff....

I usually dont do DLs a lot cause my back is permafucked up, only here and there during workouts and when lifting fat women from the floor into my bed.

fuck straps. Use chalk. Do grip work. Your grip will catch up and you'll find no need for them afterwhile. The bar slips out of your hands because your grip is weak. Don't find ways around it, do shit to fix it.

I agree with this. I used to have the exact same problem. Once I hit 400+ on deads I simply couldn't hold onto the bar. So I got myself some chalk and I was pulling 500+ for reps no problem. That's how big a difference it made. Also I think using straps hurts your deadlift form because when you bend over to strap up you are losing some of your internal pressure. IMO it's best to go straight down, grab the bar, and come right back up, just like the real pl'ers do.

Believe me this is what I think too. My problem is when even using chalk it just rips out of my hands when I know I am good for another couple of reps. I really don't want to use straps but feel I must if I want to continue progressing with my deads.
I will do some grip work but I might be developing some arthritis or something. I did grocery work for many years and worked in the frozen food section and never wore gloves...my hands would throb. I think that might have had some lingering effects.

i can assure you that "real powerlifters" use straps from time to time. esp the guys who pull hook grip. you cant do reps with a hook grip, its for singles. i have trained with dozens of plers and everyone of them have used straps at one time or another in their training.

and real plers use varying styles to pull. some stiff leg down to grab the bar, some squat down, etc......

also if you pull sumo or conventional makes a difference. how much equipment the guys wear makes a difference. with some equipment you simply cant go straight down and pull. its impossible.

Don't get me wrong I use straps in my training. Mostly just for heavy shrugs and sometimes heavy sets of sldl's and weighted pullups. I just felt they hurt me when it comes to deads.

I don't know if you consider me a real powerlifter, but i do all my sldl with straps. I Don't like doing stiffs over under, and i use too much weight and do to many reps to go over over.

joe you def a real pler esp since you "compete" in 3 lift meets. :D

you a pl'er or bb'er? If your a bb'er straps don't matter. Your goal isn't strength and you have no use for it, you need every tool that will help you to gains mass. That being said, it doesn't mean you can neglict your forearm training because they are a part of your physique too. Plus chalk isn't allowed in alot of gyms.
