I want more work (workload)

Here is a problem that is typical of young aspiring bodybuilders. And I know that the guy will probably read this, so please understand, I'm not capping on you. I get the same response from many lifters. You are not alone.

Here is some background. The guy is a young BB and fairly advanced. Getting close enough to start competing soon. So we are not talking about newbie gains. I put him on a real strenght based routine, and after 8 weeks he put 40 lbs on his bench and 60 on his rack deadlifts (because of prior injury limitations he can't do them from the floor). These are great gains in anyones book and he didn't just get stronger, he got bigger too.

Now that it's time to write the next 8 week routine.....he wants to do more work and add another day in the gym so he can workout more days a week. Why? Because he likes being in the gym. I of course told him that we would only be comprimising the routine but he was adament. After a discussion, I finally talked him out of the extra day in the gym. But he of course wanted to add lifts. I obliged. I am quite certain the new routine will not be as effective as the last, but never mind helping one learn for themselves.

He is a bright guy with a good amount of talent and I expect him to do well. But there are still some lessons to be learned.

Most people base their training on finding out the maximal amount of work they can do and still make some gains instead on finding the optimal level for optimal gains. OPTIMIZE your training, don't comprimise it!

Arnold in his book always say that if one bodypart is lacking ad extra sets for that muscle. So thats maybe where ppl get some of it from? It worked for arnold anyways.
