Irritated Sciatic

I think i over trained my back and irritated my sciatic nerve. My thigh was numb for about 2 days, so I did some stretching that my Dad showed me, he has had sciatic problems in the past. The stretching helped with the numbness and with the pain. I have been icing it a few times a day also. The ice was a tremendous help. I am still have a little soreness on my lower back and ass but, its getting better. I am also taking some Rx anti-inflammatory and pain killers.

Any other ideas?

Has anyone else ever done this?

I am going to take a few days off from the gym to make sure it heals up okay.

Streching seems to work the best for me. Sit on a chair place one ankle on the opposite knee and reach down to the opposite ankle and hold the strech for at least 8 seconds or as long as you can. That streches the paraforma muscle that the nerve runs through. Streching the hams and inversion also helps. Sciatic nerve can be a bitch.

I had this realllly bad last year. My dumb ass went and injected into that hurt ass cheek too before I realized what it was and it turned into one of those terribly painful shots you never forget. The pain was so bad I could barely walk, couldn't bend over, lift, nothing!

Stretching definitely does help, along with laying flat on a firm matress and definitely not lifting or putting any strain on the area. Some people go to chiropractors to help but that has it's own set of risks.

Good luck!

I wish I had an inversion table or one of those harnesses. I think that it would help a lot. Im still sore, I have some pain that shoots through my butt cheek but, the numbness is gone.
The hardest part is taking time off from the gym. Especially since I am training for an upcoming comp. Thanks for the replies guys :)

Sports Injury therapist help for me...if you can find a good one... He did the kinesio taping / some ultrasound on it and acupuncture all in one session.
They special in soft tissue manipulation so he was working the surrounding muscle with massage...
Other then that , at home all you can do is rest and ice it till the area goes nummmm and then he says wait to it warms back up to normal and ice it again.

i had that before and training through the pain caused two herniated discs by the time i was 19. i HIGHLY suggest you do not workout on it until you are better. it took months of treatments to get better, and i was lucky enough to have my discs repaired by laser.
