just starting.... again

ok so i have taken about a solid year off from working out... i was finishing school, tried getting a bowflex (used it once every other week), but now school is winding down and i re-joined a gym. ive gone through the first month of aches and pains and moaning and complaining, but i "feel" so much weaker than in times of the past. im almost 28, and the last time i stopped working out and started again i was 23. my question is, will i still see gains in a decent amount of time, or is it time to take it slow and try new workouts. i used to abide by the 5X5 routine, but before im ready to tackle that routine again id be open to suggestions. right now im 6'5" weigh 240, but have a nice belly, no abs showing, but my diet is great and i train 4-5 times per week, i also ride a bike and run as often as i can.
